Birding Northern California Review

Birding Northern California

With the passion of a life-long birder and the precision of a former professor of engineering, John Kemper has written an exceptional, new site guide for northern California. Detailed information is given for 81 major locations from the Oregon border through Monterey, King, and Tulare counties plus the Kern River Valley in Kern County; Mono County and the White Mountains are included on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada
The book focuses on species of interest by listing "specialty birds" and "other key birds" at the beginning of each location description. Specialty birds include uncommon to abundant birds found primarily in the western United States, endangered or threatened species, and rare birds if the site is among the best for the bird. The text describes when, where, and how to the find the birds at each site, and this information was personally verified by John during two years of fieldwork preparing the book. Range maps and bar charts at the back of the book are cross-referenced to the best sites for each species and the time of year when each species occurs in different regions of the state. Readers will appreciate the easily readable, detailed maps and the clearly written site descriptions. Novices, long-time California birders, and birders from out of state planning their first or 100th trip to the state, will find the information needed to find the birds of interest to them and to plan successful birding trips.

This is an excellent guidebook for anyone who is interested in doing any part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Section by section the guidebook walks the reader through what to expect and look for along the trail. Combined with the section maps and web based trip planner there aren't many questions that go unanswered.
There's a lot of information packed into the book with excellent trip suggestions and pointers on what to see and look for on your trip. I especially liked the suggested trips and the section on through paddling.

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) links the waterways of New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine. This is the first official guidebook to the whole 740-mile trail and reflects the broad mission of the NFCT: To celebrate the rich human heritage and diverse natural environment of the Northern Forest by establishing a water trail that traces historic Native American travel routes across the region. The route's variety of flat water, swift water, and whitewater--expanding across a range of rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds--provides extensive opportunities for canoe, kayak, and camping recreation. Vibrant communities along the way offer inns, B&Bs, and museums, as well as other recreational and historical attractions. This guidebook goes beyond route information to serve as a narrative of the natural, human, and cultural legacy of the region and its wonderful accessibility to visitors.

i got this from the library, i'm glad i didn't buy it. the info is fine but the way it is organized is very confusing. it's broken down into 5 different areas, but then in each area's chapter, the ski areas are grouped together, the lodging is grouped together, or grouped in subsections with names like "whitefish point" that you wouldn't recognize if you weren't from around there. and some of the places that are included in the same chapter are hundreds of miles apart, it's not like they are things that you could do in the same day. it isn't organized in a way that would let a person who had never been to the UP find a place that had the kinds of things they wanted to see, without flipping back and forth between the ski section, the camp section, etc., or without using another book, the internet, etc., to figure out where all these places are. it's very annoying. this might be ok as a supplementary book but i wouldn't use it as the only book.

We just returned from a trip to BC where we used this book in conjunction with others. Some of the information is useful, but time and time again we were disappointed, especially in the area of lodging. Several B&Bs and Lodges that were given very positive reviews were either very ordinary, motelish or were just plain dreadful. There is a good reason why these are hidden, and should remain so.

My husband is from Wyoming. I got this guide to find new things to do when visiting the in-laws. There were sights and activities around his home town that he and his sister had never been to. The recommendations for food and lodging were very good. Some of the businesses are no longer but that is a risk for any printed guide. I was very happy with this guide.
