(More customer reviews)We used this book to tour the whole state of Tennessee for our Anniversary. Every time we went to a "hidden" recommendation, we found exactly what the book said. We were never disappointed. We also used the AAA book of Tennessee. "Hidden" gave us a better idea of things to do and see. It had general descriptions of areas in addition to city information. We only used the AAA book when we wanted to stay in a chain hotel. The "Hidden" book only suggest non-chain lodging

It talks about the shipwrecks of Lake Superior, the geological landscape, rivers and waterfalls, outdoor activities (including curling and watching the stars) and where to locate the nearest liquor store! It is obvious that she loves her neighborhood, and this book helps you to explore more than the surface. A must read for anyone headed up Highway 61 - and a great gift for those who live there.

My husband and I like to hike, fish, and generally hang out in beautiful places...and sometimes we just don't want to sleep on the ground or pack a car-load of camping equipment. This book tells me where we can get our outdoor fix and a bed. We know Northern California well but there's lots of places that we didn't know about covered in this guide. The ratings and activity icons make it easy to see how plush or funky the cabin is and what are the nearby outdoor activities. This would be a good gift for Mother's Day or Father's Day.

(More customer reviews)This travel guide is an extremely general guide to the sights of Northern California and Lake Tahoe. I bought it because we will be going to Lake Tahoe for a week and this guide has barely 20 pages covering the entire Lake Tahoe and Reno region. I could name more attractions off the top of my head than is covered by this book.
There are only a couple attractions listed for each city with very brief descriptions. I don't know why the writer chose the ones that were listed because I could think of many better places to go in some of the cities that I have been to. It doesn't really give me confidence in the rest of the book.
The editing of this book is very sloppy. Six pages of the Lake Tahoe section were mistakenly swapped with the Gold Country section. I wonder what else is wrong if they were unable to catch such an obvious mistake.
As for the family aspect of this, many of the restaurants listed in this guide that I am familiar with are not even that family-friendly. They tend to be on the fancy high-end side, restaurants that I wouldn't even take my well-behaved kids to dine. Just glancing at other restaurants in areas unfamiliar to me, I notice many wine bars and resort restaurants, not exactly family vacations destinations.
I guess if you have no idea what is in Northern California, this book might be helpful, but you would be much better off with the free guide that your local AAA gives out.

All the locations we've tried have been great and the rating system is clear and accurate. I highly recommend this book!
