The Pilgrim's Italy: A Travel Guide to the Saints (Colleen Heater) Review

It really never occurred to me that I might use The Pilgrim's Italy: A Travel Guide to the Saints as an actual guide book to understand the religious culture of Italy. Then, my husband and I found ourselves charmed and immersed in the religious culture of the exquisite Italian countryside (and cities) where we found our unlikely travel companion in this book to be invaluable. For example, as foot tourists in Northern Italy, we were rescued by The Pilgrim's Guide from our destination dilemma when we found ourselves at the train station in Menestra instead of Venice! Thankfully, The Pilgrim's Guide was very helpful. The book says, when you are in Mesestra, you still must take another train to get into Venice. Why can't other travel books be so simple and specific? One might also read The Pilgrim's Italy for its delightful short biographies of Italy's most popular (and plentiful!) saints, but it's an inspirational read as well as a marvelous travel book.

Europe's Monastery and Convent Guesthouses: A Pilgrim's Travel Guide Review

Europe's Monastery and Convent Guesthouses: A Pilgrim's Travel Guide

We bought several monastery lodging guidebooks for our travels to Europe. Each guidebook was very helpful in its own way. We found this guidebook Europe's Monastery and Convent Guesthouses: A Pilgrim's Travel Guide to be one of our favorite resources, as it was the most updated and had current website addresses and email addresses. In addition, we found some monastery guidebooks to provide good travel information on how to reach each place while others didn't provide this helpful info. However, Europe's Monastery and Convent Guesthouses was one of the better books in providing directions on how to reach each place. We also really liked the "Where to Stay" section, which for us was one of the most useful as it described the acccommodations available at each place. Above all, we also really liked the spiritual and historical aspect of monastery life integrated into this guidebook.

The content is well done. Where I was quiet surprised was the printing quality of the book. Some letter can hardly be seen.

Moon San Juan Islands: Including Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands (Moon Handbooks) Review

Moon San Juan Islands: Including Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands (Moon Handbooks)

Our family is going on a trip to Orcas Island and I had been searching the internet sites to find out what was available etc. I have a friend who had spent a couple of summers there several years ago and called him to see what we shouldn't miss. He gave me a huge list of things they had really enjoyed, but I would still need to reseach more information about them to make decisions and set up for activities that need advanced arrangements. I found the "Moon" site and saw that they had a book. I ordered it used, on Amazon. It has all the stuff my friend recommended and all the info. I needed in advance, extra tips for preparation, prices, advice to get the best deals, etc. We leave a week from today, so I can't say yet how accurate the info is or how well it worked out for us, but I feel much better prepared now that I've read the book.
I've used other travel books for previous trips and comparatively found I really liked the organization and ease in using the Moon book.

The Unofficial Guide to Adventure Travel in Alaska (Unofficial Guides) Review

The Unofficial Guide to Adventure Travel in Alaska (Unofficial Guides)

I bought this book for my husband who is up in Alaska working for the summer. I really had a hard time finding a book that had more information on Alaska than just where to get the best crab legs along cruise routes. My husband would be doing less tourist-ing and more adventuring during his time in Alaska. He was thrilled with all the information at the front of the book that gave Alaska-specific tips about safety, supplies, and "what to expect."
This book is perfect for you if you are looking for information about hiking, climbing, camping, and rafting/kayaking trips and only the occasional paragraph about in-town accommodation and great dinner spots. The beginning of the book is organized by activity rather than by region, but you can also look up info about specific regions too.

Life in the English Country House: A Social and Architectural History Review

Life in the English Country House: A Social and Architectural History
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mark Girouard, an architectural historian, has traced the roles of form and function in England's Great Houses in this densely illustrated, sensitively written book. Floor-plans, innumerable photographs and drawings (many of homes now destroyed), and portraits pepper the text, which is readability itself.
The book follows a chronological path from the Mediaval Household to the present day. The text isn't dry at all. Delicious details abound: Bess of Hardwick pacing her Great Chamber of Hardwick Hall, waiting for the royal visit that never came in the instantly-dated house she'd built for this very purpose, ... The origin of the phrase "backstairs intrigues" (both political and sexual).... the slow but persistant birth of the aristocratic ideal of "privacy"--and how it affected dining halls....the rise of the great dilettante libraries (and the rooms to house them).....and the advent of the freakish innovation of indoor plumbing (and a picture of the Duke of Wellington's elaborate WC) are just a few tidbits.
Mr. Girouard doesn't neglect the "downstairs" portion of a Great House, because he's interested in the whole institution as a functioning unit. Some of the most intriguing photos are of beloved servants' portraits, and the almost Shaker-like beauty of a working kitchen or laundry. Included, also, is a printed "Summary of Livery Men's Duties, Etc., Etc.", of Hatfield House, and darned if it doesn't sound like instructions for empoyees at an indifferent New York hotel!
This book is a delicious retrospective, and will make any red-blooded Anglophile who longs for one of these faded leviathans very happy indeed. Now, if you need me further, I will be in the Orangery.

The English country house has flourished over the centuries because of its ability to adapt to the changes in English society. This book is an account of the ways in which the upper-class life style were reflected in the houses in which the wealthy and powerful lived. First published in 1978, this is a history of the English country house from the point of view of its owners and users. Ranging from the Middle Ages to the world of Evelyn Waugh, the author also discusses and illustrates how the life of the upper classes shaped their country hosues, how they entertained and were served, how they ran the country and their estates and how they reconciled personal privacy and public display.
