We are looking to fly to San Francisco and take the highway north for a scenic vacation. I needed a book that would give me some good starter information to do more research. This book fit the bill and did a very good job of giving descriptions of where to go but, also included maps to give me a visual of what the trip would look like.
I would recommend this series of books for getting your driving trip started. It does not go into a great amount of detail but does give you enough information about where to start and the sights along the way.

Yes, this book is a must for any foreign traveler planning to visit the USA. But the value of the book goes far
beyond this audience. It is a storehouse of information presented in an entertaining style that will capture
the attention of American citizens as well. I was amazed at how the details of American life are so clearly organized. This book covers ALL of the day to day idiosyncracies we Americans take for granted. Read it yourself and send one to a friend.

Not sure why the last reviewer bought a driving guide instead of a hiking guide, but I found this book to be incredibly helpful and entertaining. It contained the right balance of text with history and don't-miss places to visit for each community, along with listings of restaurants and places to stay. She tell you the miles (and kilometers) between major towns and includes lots of great pictures. Highly recommended for preparing for the trip, and a great resource once you're on the road.

We suddenly decided to go to Alaska in 2 weeks and we needed a good travel guide so we could do a lot of last minute planning quickly. This is it! I was able to make all our arrangements using it (along with the Internet). You can find the information you want easily in this book. I've been to Alaska before and was pleased to find that this is accurate too. I've used a lot of travel books for various trips to other places and frequently end up frustrated with them, but this book has been a total delight. I highly recommend it.

Hidden Pacific Northwest: Including Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Victoria, and Coastal British Columbia (Hidden Travel)
Average Reviews:

I have the 5th Edition of this book, but, this can only be better I hope.
It is a very personal review of the states and what they have to offer and as opposed to other books that are just boring and incomprehensible listings of attractions and dining and lodging .
I actually went to some of the dining and hidden attraction recommendations from this book and it didn't fail me. All those places were certainly what the book said they would be or maybe more than that.
The only drawback i can see is that there wasnt any mention of good campgrounds that car-campers could easily refer to. But for that, you can look up "the best in tent camping".
Good Luck with your trips. I know mine was a great success.

Hidden guides combine unique travel choices, outdoor adventures and little-known locales into a guide where vacations meet adventures. Each guide includes detailed maps, complete internet information for each listing, highlighted author favorites, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. While Seattle may be leading the growth in this red-hot region, there are still many unspoiled getaways to be found in the Pacific Northwest. This guide balances coverage of vintage favorites with new hot spots. Hidden Pacific Northwest takes travelers one step further by adding extensive coverage of outdoor activities, from windsurfing the Columbia River Gorge to climbing glaciers on Mount Rainier to sea kayaking the British Columbia coast. It details 333 places to hike and 726 campgrounds. Also described are distinctive lodging options -- including 93 coastal inns -- 18 covered bridges to write home about, 10 lighthouses to climb, and 45 places to shop for Northwest crafts. This edition features 53 maps.

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino Review

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ray Riegert has devoted a lifetime to travelling the coast of California and finding favorite restaurants, bed & breakfast establishments, and cataloging some of the finer museums and beaches. This book has a little something for everyone, but a lot more if your idea of hidden travel is visiting the large cities of the California Coast. San Francisco receives nearly 100 pages of coverage alone and the clear emphasis is upon urban areas. In these places, Riegert has found some of the best eating establishments, listed the finest gay friendly nightclubs, discussed local parks, and, of particular interest to me, included a number of popular and classy neighborhood bookstores. However, what I consider California's truly hidden coast, its wild and scenic parks and open space areas, receive decidedly less coverage. A few trails are listed, though the trailhead locations are not identified, and only Point Reyes National Seashore gets the full coverage it deserves. On the positive side, Riegert does not neglect the many rural hostels of California where budget travellers can stay often at cheaper rates than at nearby campgrounds. The reason I am only giving this book 3 stars is that it has a lot of text, well over 500 pages, and all of it is in small print. This makes for difficult reading. The lack of photos also detracts a bit from a travel guide. On the whole, I think the author tried to be a little too comprehensive with the book and the result is that while everything was mentioned, almost everything could have used a fuller description. Still, if you want 3 day weekend tours of California's largest cities along with adequate descriptions of nearby smaller tourist destinations (Laguna Beach and La Jolla in southern California, Big Sur, Mendocino, and Eureka to the north) this is a nice book.

No other guide offers coverage of this fabled shoreline as comprehensively as Hidden Coast of California, focusing on the many miles of unspoiled beach-long famous stretches to dozens of hidden pockets along the way.Award-winning author Ray Riegert introduces travelers to the unique personalities of three of America's favorite oceanside cities. He leads travelers to bohemian coffeehouses near the shops and theaters of San Francisco's Union Square, traces the roots of the movie industry at famous film sites around Los Angeles and brings the entire family to San Diego's world-famous zoo and animal theme parks. Along the way the author suggests a visit to small fishing towns and international shipping ports, Victorian neighborhoods, and oceanfront mansions. He details how to best enjoy the state's popular coastal retreats -- including sunbathing in Santa Barbara, beachcombing in Mendocino and relaxing in a bed-and-breakfast inn near Monterey. The ultimate beach lover's travel guide, Hidden Coast of California covers 175 beaches: 123 surfing beaches, 48 camping beaches, and even 21 nude beaches. A virtual bed-and-breakfast guide, this book recommends over 150 small hotels, guest cottages, and bed-and-breakfast inns. Perfectly suited for out-of-state visitors, this guide also offers locals countless suggestions for weekend getaways.

Driving the Pacific Coast Oregon and Washington, 6th

I was hoping this would be a description of scenic drives along the Pacific Coast Highway (similar to some of the Falcon Scenic Driving guides). It is more of a typical guide book to various locations along the way (sights, yes, but more on restaurants, lodging, etc.). It'll be useful on my planned trip, but as other reviewers have said, it's for use WHILE traveling, not so much (for me at least) for advance planning.

Roadside Americana (Enthusiast Color) Review

Roadside Americana (Enthusiast Color)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is a disguise to this volume, a new title for a compendium of three books originally published by Motorbooks International (MBI), under its corporate pseudonym, Crestline. While each of the trio is worthy in its own right: Michael Karl Witzel's ""Gas Station Memories" (1994) and "Drive-In Deluxe" (1997); plus Tim Steil's rendering of "Route 66" (2000) -- pictures by Jim Luning now appear uncredited --- there is no advance notice offered by amazon.com that this is NOT new material. That is the caveat for those who might already own any of all of the original publications and are fooled by the revamped moniker. However (and this is why I offer 5-stars), the encompassment is a great value as an introduction toward the heritage of The Great American Roaside for newcomers to the genre. The sub-title, 'Gas-Food-Lodging' is meritous for its depictions of the first two topics, but leaves much to be desired on the latter: the only motels featured are along Old Route 66 in Mr. Steil's reprint, and even there, they are few and far bewteen (such is reality). Since I purchased this single-bound set sight-unseen, and already owned each of the indvidual photo/texts, I intend to award my copy of this book to a friend as a Christmas present.

While countless books have covered individual Americana, roadside culture, and car-related subjects, none have attempted to encapsulate the lure of roadside America in one neatly packaged volume. But what is Americana, if not an expanse of fond memories and compelling kitsch as vast as the nation itself. This smorgasbord offers discriminating readers a tasty assortment of A-Z articles and accompanying photographs and images that touch upon all the old chestnuts (Route 66, drive-in restaurants, filling stations, et al) as well as some edgier topics to appeal to younger generations interested in the seedier and/or more whimsical sides of roadside America (how about Earl Scheib, the Chicago entrepreneur who promised America that he could paint and car for $99; a brief history of 1950s juvenile delinquent hot rod films; or a look back at the brief but brilliant film and TV series "Then Came Bronson"?). As with any encyclopedia, each entry varies in length, depending upon the relative importance of the subject. All of the standards are there, and if some of the 250 entries seem arbitrary, its because they are. This book is a compilation of Witzel's Gas Station Memories (ISBN 0879389257) and Drive-In Deluxe (ISBN 0760302111) and Steil's Route 66 (ISBN 0760307474).

Weekend Adventures in Northern California 7 Ed Review

Weekend Adventures in Northern California 7 Ed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Carole Terwilliger Myers, author of the 8th Edition of Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California, points out in her introduction that there is nothing more disappointing than returning home from a vacation and finding out that you had missed an interesting attraction or you overpaid for your hotel accommodations.
I would have to concur, and as I am a stickler for preparing my travel itineraries well in advance-I just hate surprises and disappointments.
Although there may be several travel guides available pertaining to San Francisco and Northern California, each seeking its own market niche, the Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California is built around providing information that will aid the reader to quickly ascertain what is of special interest in the area he or she is planning to visit. Moreover, the guide contains useful advice concerning bargain rates, welcoming of families, aesthetically pleasing, historic significance, etc. In addition, the author provides phone numbers, toll-free numbers, fax numbers, and websites.
The 469 pages of the guide is bigger, thicker, and longer than most and it is divided into sixteen sections, a substantial index, and many well-chosen black-and-white photos.
The author commences with San Francisco, and as pointed out, all other destinations radiate from here. Chapters are devoted to Coast South, Coast North, 101 South, 101 North, 1-80 North, 1-880 South, 1-5 North, Highway 49-Gold Rush Country, The High Sierra, Santa Cruz Mountains, The Delta, Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Winter Snow Fun, and finally Miscellaneous Adventures such as family camps, houseboats, river trips, pack trips, and camping.
Excellent suggestions are offered as to annual events, what to do, where to stay and eat.
For example, if you read the section pertaining to Monterey, you will notice that some of the events listed are the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, the Grand Prix auto races, the Jazz Festival, and Christmas in the Adobes.
As for the last one, we are informed, that each year a group of historic adobes are festively decked out with period decorations and illuminated only by candlelight.
Terwilliger Myers' writing is brisk and entertaining, and you can see she has done her homework, as evidenced by her well-researched and useful information.

All in all, the guide makes an excellent reference to visiting San Francisco and Northern California and is a must-have for anyone traveling in the region.

[...] One of my computer-side companions has been Hidden Pacific NW and now Hidden Washington. I've seen a lot of the state and know Eric Lucas knows Washington, so his book is a great reference when needed. What I really like is his "hidden" finds at different places. If you want a book that portrays a true picture of what you might find in Washington and is easy to use, Lucas's book fits the bill. I would recommend it for all visitors and newcomers to the state.

This manual may not suit the requirements of the most ardent of backpackers and thrill seekers, but for an average Joe Camper like myself, it really came in handy through Washington State, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and on up into Banff and Jasper. A most resourceful guide that lists National Park Service information, directions to the Parks, campsites, hiking trails, info on backwoods camping...even tells you where you can shower after the fourth day! My only criticism is that my copy is as beat up as my hiking boots. A great resource to have, whether you're only there for a day, a drive-in camper, day hiker, or backpacker. I highly recommend it. America's National Parks for Dummies, Second Edition Review

America's National Parks for Dummies, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a great guide for visiting the most popular national parks in the United States. It provides extensive information on parks such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion. Repanshek details the pros and cons of each park with candor with helpful comments about what to expect from the weather, wildlife and crowds.
Each chapter focuses on a different park. Within each chapter, he covers such topics as: geology, attractions, directions, fees, safety precautions, hikes, ranger programs, lodging, dining options, and other essentials such as post offices, lost and founds, etc. He writes in the first person, and often makes amusing commentaries about his own experiences and expectations. He does a thorough job covering each park - one can sense from reading that not only has he personally visited these places, but that he has returned to each a number of times and writes with the experience that is so valuable to those on a limited time schedule. He acknowledges that while each park could be a vacation of its own, many people can only spend a day or two at each place. To accomodate such travelers, he includes a section in each chapter on what to do if you only have one day to explore the park. This can be an incredibly useful tool if you are on a tight time schedule.
Frequently in travel guides, one gets the sense that the author is either an avid outdoorsman bent on roughing it, or a once-a-year vacationer who would rather die than sleep in a tent. Not so here - Repanshek clearly addresses both groups. He details all the available campsites in a park, along with his opinions on how clean/quiet/developed each site is; but also lists hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, ranging from the cheapest to the swankiest of lodgings. Same goes for the dining options. I personally appreciated this a great deal - my trip was primarily a camping excursion, but every once in a while we decided to splurge on decent hotels and were grateful for his frankness in describing what we could expect for our money.
My only gripe with this book is that it only covers 15 parks. Of course, due to its level of detail, it would be difficult to cover more. My hope is that Kurt Repanshek considers putting together two or more separate guides, for the Eastern and Western National Parks. He has a great eye for detail and leaves no stones unturned in his comprehensive tour of the American parks. I highly recommend this guide!

This book was one of the only ones we found that covered San Fran and other northern CA destinations. Very good overviews, but not a huge amount of detail, so you will need additional information on some of the destinations. I bought this book for my husband who is up in Alaska working for the summer. I really had a hard time finding a book that had more information on Alaska than just where to get the best crab legs along cruise routes. My husband would be doing less tourist-ing and more adventuring during his time in Alaska. He was thrilled with all the information at the front of the book that gave Alaska-specific tips about safety, supplies, and "what to expect."
This book is perfect for you if you are looking for information about hiking, climbing, camping, and rafting/kayaking trips and only the occasional paragraph about in-town accommodation and great dinner spots. The beginning of the book is organized by activity rather than by region, but you can also look up info about specific regions too.

I read these reviews before buying this guide. They were all glowing except Mr. Walker saying that he wanted more information on what to see. Then I read dozens more great reviews on the first EZ guide.
I figured, it's a good chance this guy was confused. And after getting the guide, I could tell he was. He must not have read what it is. It is to make it easy for you to find the difficult to find old route not to give you places to stay or eat, supermarkets, locations of gas stations or anything else. Yes it does include some high points but give us a break! Walker should have bought the Dining & Lodging Guide and Adventure Handbook.
