The "Special Interest Tours" are well planned and have something for everyone. As a "local", the book is a great reference for our many visitors. We use the "Calendar of Events" section to schedule out-of-town guest's visits to coincide with fun events such as Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival. The writing is colorful, descriptions are enticing. This book makes planning and organizing a trip in Oregon so easy. Gordon Coffin stayed away from the overvisited tourist attractions and shared his private collection of Oregon gems. This is a book for anyone planning a trip to Oregon and a must for all Oregonians.

It gave a rough idea of just how much time one should allow. The descriptions were accurate and that helped a lot. I only found 1 thing that didn't match up and that was only a difference in a few miles. Overall this book was really good and I would use it again.

(More customer reviews)We usually go with Lonely Planet guides (used them in India, Thailand and Japan so far) but the one for Guatemala got not so good reviews so we decided to try this one.
big mistake.
we planned our trip based on advice from friends that visited Guatemala and were counting on the guidebook for the little things, like places to eat, sleep, what to see and how to get there.
throughout the trip we got the feeling that the writers just chose the first place they say off the bus station and reviewed it. they never ventured far from the center to show you places or things that are less known.
the thing all places in this book have in common is the average high price.
all the reviewed restaurants, hotels and such were of the highest prices we could find, and usually unjustified.
we were able to find better accommodation and food for sometimes half the price!
this book might be more suitable for people who are limited in time, like to see the main tourist attractions when they travel and dont really care to spend a little more $ to stay close to the center and be comfortable.
if you like to explore, see things that not everyone see, eat with the locals in the market, meet interesting people - skip this book.

(More customer reviews)This guide is for the experienced traveler. Judith Wylie is a good writer and she makes the places and attractions she describes come alive. On a recent trip to the West Coast I bought this book and found its recommendations which I followed to be accurate.
However, the Best Places series' emphasis on selectivity means an awful lot of choices as far as lodging and dining are concerned are left out. For someone beginning to explore an area a more inclusive guidebook might be a better choice. Also this book has no illustrations or photographs (save for the cover), which lessens both its attractiveness and usefulness.

(More customer reviews)We live in New Mexico, and every holiday or free weekend we use this guide to lead us to new exciting and beautiful places. This book is the perfect travel companion for anyone interested in smaller, off the beaten path places. This book led us to discover Las Vegas, NM, a (yet) not so touristy place unlike Taos or Sante Fe. Thanks to this guide, we enjoyed the free road side Hot Springs located in a pristine alpine valley, and delicious restaurants that put the more known places to shame. It has small eateries and interesting museums, parks like the little known Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument with thousands of drawings, on the way from Socorro to Alamogordo. Yet again, this is a place not mentioned in other tourist maps or books. I would recommend for anyone really interested in traveling through New Mexico to also have DeLorme Topographic Map of New Mexico with them for references and the smaller roads. The general RandMcNally or AAA maps just don't cut it. Those topo maps are only about 16 dollars and will work great with the Hidden New Mexico book or any travelguide. Check out Chaco Canyon National Monument as well, and stay in El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, you will not believe your eyes! That was also a tip from the Hidden New Mexico book. Enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation (I am biased, I know)!
