Moon Handbooks Yosemite Review

Moon Handbooks Yosemite
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I had had this book when I first went to Yosemite a decade ago. It would have saved a lot of time and gotten me and my wife to more of the true highlights in the area. This book covers everything from the best trails to the best dining options in and near the park. It lists all the campgrounds in and around the park and notes which require reservations and which are available on a first come-first served basis. And of course it includes a lot of natural and human history in the park region. The book also features some nice full color maps.
What I particularly like about this guide is the organization. Each section (recreation, lodging, camping, etc) is subdivided into various park regions: Yosemite Valley, Hetch Hetchy, Wawona, Tioga Pass and the Eastern Sierra. As a result, readers have a clearer picture of all that Yosemite National Park has to offer. After reading this book, I will be exploring more of Hetch Hetchy on my next visit in early April. This guide is simply the most comprehensive look at Yosemite and is a must for planning vacations around.

A magical place, Yosemite National Park possesses all the hallmarks of the mythical western frontier -- towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, ancient stands of trees, steep mountains and beautiful alpine lakes. In Moon Handbooks Yosemite, from best-selling author and outdoor expert Ann Marie Brown, travelers will find all the information they need to experience everything the park has to offer and more! Unlike other guides to the park, Moon Handbooks Yosemite combines two elements that are usually found separately -- practical information on getting to and through the park and extensive coverage of all outdoor recreational activities. Whether a visitor intends to stay in the park at a lodge, cabin, or remote campsite, or is using one of the gateway towns as a base, this book provides all the necessary contacts to plan the perfect park vacation. Ann Marie's extensive knowledge of the park's wild lands offers hikers, campers, rock climbers or casual nature lovers insightful and informative tips on the best rivers for swimming, hiking trails to use when avoiding the crowds, meadows for photographing wildlife, and much more. From first-timer to old pro, Moon Handbooks Yosemite is a must-have on a Yosemite trip checklist.

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino Review

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino
Average Reviews:

Ray Riegert has devoted a lifetime to travelling the coast of California and finding favorite restaurants, bed & breakfast establishments, and cataloging some of the finer museums and beaches. This book has a little something for everyone, but a lot more if your idea of hidden travel is visiting the large cities of the California Coast. San Francisco receives nearly 100 pages of coverage alone and the clear emphasis is upon urban areas. In these places, Riegert has found some of the best eating establishments, listed the finest gay friendly nightclubs, discussed local parks, and, of particular interest to me, included a number of popular and classy neighborhood bookstores. However, what I consider California's truly hidden coast, its wild and scenic parks and open space areas, receive decidedly less coverage. A few trails are listed, though the trailhead locations are not identified, and only Point Reyes National Seashore gets the full coverage it deserves. On the positive side, Riegert does not neglect the many rural hostels of California where budget travellers can stay often at cheaper rates than at nearby campgrounds. The reason I am only giving this book 3 stars is that it has a lot of text, well over 500 pages, and all of it is in small print. This makes for difficult reading. The lack of photos also detracts a bit from a travel guide. On the whole, I think the author tried to be a little too comprehensive with the book and the result is that while everything was mentioned, almost everything could have used a fuller description. Still, if you want 3 day weekend tours of California's largest cities along with adequate descriptions of nearby smaller tourist destinations (Laguna Beach and La Jolla in southern California, Big Sur, Mendocino, and Eureka to the north) this is a nice book.

No other guide offers coverage of this fabled shoreline as comprehensively as Hidden Coast of California, focusing on the many miles of unspoiled beach-long famous stretches to dozens of hidden pockets along the way.Award-winning author Ray Riegert introduces travelers to the unique personalities of three of America's favorite oceanside cities. He leads travelers to bohemian coffeehouses near the shops and theaters of San Francisco's Union Square, traces the roots of the movie industry at famous film sites around Los Angeles and brings the entire family to San Diego's world-famous zoo and animal theme parks. Along the way the author suggests a visit to small fishing towns and international shipping ports, Victorian neighborhoods, and oceanfront mansions. He details how to best enjoy the state's popular coastal retreats -- including sunbathing in Santa Barbara, beachcombing in Mendocino and relaxing in a bed-and-breakfast inn near Monterey. The ultimate beach lover's travel guide, Hidden Coast of California covers 175 beaches: 123 surfing beaches, 48 camping beaches, and even 21 nude beaches. A virtual bed-and-breakfast guide, this book recommends over 150 small hotels, guest cottages, and bed-and-breakfast inns. Perfectly suited for out-of-state visitors, this guide also offers locals countless suggestions for weekend getaways.

Weekend Adventures in Northern California 7 Ed Review

Weekend Adventures in Northern California 7 Ed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Carole Terwilliger Myers, author of the 8th Edition of Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California, points out in her introduction that there is nothing more disappointing than returning home from a vacation and finding out that you had missed an interesting attraction or you overpaid for your hotel accommodations.
I would have to concur, and as I am a stickler for preparing my travel itineraries well in advance-I just hate surprises and disappointments.
Although there may be several travel guides available pertaining to San Francisco and Northern California, each seeking its own market niche, the Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California is built around providing information that will aid the reader to quickly ascertain what is of special interest in the area he or she is planning to visit. Moreover, the guide contains useful advice concerning bargain rates, welcoming of families, aesthetically pleasing, historic significance, etc. In addition, the author provides phone numbers, toll-free numbers, fax numbers, and websites.
The 469 pages of the guide is bigger, thicker, and longer than most and it is divided into sixteen sections, a substantial index, and many well-chosen black-and-white photos.
The author commences with San Francisco, and as pointed out, all other destinations radiate from here. Chapters are devoted to Coast South, Coast North, 101 South, 101 North, 1-80 North, 1-880 South, 1-5 North, Highway 49-Gold Rush Country, The High Sierra, Santa Cruz Mountains, The Delta, Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Winter Snow Fun, and finally Miscellaneous Adventures such as family camps, houseboats, river trips, pack trips, and camping.
Excellent suggestions are offered as to annual events, what to do, where to stay and eat.
For example, if you read the section pertaining to Monterey, you will notice that some of the events listed are the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, the Grand Prix auto races, the Jazz Festival, and Christmas in the Adobes.
As for the last one, we are informed, that each year a group of historic adobes are festively decked out with period decorations and illuminated only by candlelight.
Terwilliger Myers' writing is brisk and entertaining, and you can see she has done her homework, as evidenced by her well-researched and useful information.

All in all, the guide makes an excellent reference to visiting San Francisco and Northern California and is a must-have for anyone traveling in the region.

Frommer's Yosemite & Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks Review

Frommer's Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guide is very succinct, affordable, and accessible. It's not at all comprehensive, yet is still one of the most useful guides to the region due to its brevity and organziation. Plus it covers both Sequoia/Kings Canyon and Yosemite.
Planning: A nice job is done. There is a lot of detail on roads into the parks and hotels, information lacking in the more specialized hiking guides. It covers most of the big park highlights you don't want to miss if you're only visiting the region once or twice. This is not the sort of guide that will tell you where to find solitude and remote regions. It is also one of the best guides to have if you don't want to rough it the entire trip. I like to space long backpacking treks with a visit to a nice restaurant-this guide offers a lot of variety on this end. The same goes for hotels, if you're not into backpacking or looking for a place just after getting on/off a plane.
Hiking Trip Descriptions: Pretty minimal. This book spotlights the more popular trails but does a fairly decent job of highlighting don't miss items.
Maps: Non-topographic but highly readable. The printing is crisp and highly readable. Useful for planning short day trips.
Overall this is a pretty useful guide. As the price is great you can easily buy this to supplement a more specialized hiking guide and map. Note that Frommer seems to put out a new edition every couple of years. I don't think very much could have changed, so an older edition will do just fine.

Best Places - Northern California Coast - Destinations Review

Best Places - Northern California Coast - Destinations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very disappointed in this book. I am a native to Northern California and wanted to learn more about our Coast, since I live within an hour's drive of many beaches. The author skipped over most of the smaller beaches and just gave incredibly short summaries of the most popular places - I did not need a book for this information! The authors majored on restaurants and lodgings, however, since they only gave listings for the more popular sites, none of the information was helpful to me. I was planning a trip to Pacifica, and there wasn't a single entry on that entire town!! There are probably 3 hotels (at least) and many, many restaurants and beaches there. But there was not even a paragraph about any of it.
I purchased the book because I wanted one dedicated to Northern California's unique beaches. However, I was much happier with another book that while it also listed the beaches in Southern California, at least I had access to a satisfactory amount of insight into the Northern California beaches. The book is named "Foghorn Outdoors California Beaches" - you can see my review under that book if you are interested.
As for this book, I wish I had not wasted my money.

This book is fun to read and has many great ideas about what to do in Palm Springs and the surrounding towns. I particularly like the separate highlighted areas that point out things that the author feels you really shouldn't miss on your trip. The book covers activities, food and lodging. Although it doesn't say specifically how much things cost, it does give a general price range, as in "moderate to ultra deluxe". I think this book will help any visitor to the Palm Springs area find and see things they might otherwise miss.

Ulysses Press's Hidden Guides are where vacations meet adventures. First, each book in the Hidden series reviews a destination's famed attractions. Then - and more importantly - it invites the reader to go further by exploring "hidden" spots that other guides overlook, including small inns and recommended restaurants. The guides feature places local residents enjoy, including beaches, parks, and non-touristy neighbourhoods and contain the author's favourite picks, three-day getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, website and email addresses, maps that "zoom in" on each area, and plenty of photos and illustrations.

i am planning a trip concentrating on coastal areas near l a. so after using amazon's "search the book" feature, i saw this book covered many of the areas i was looking at. while waiting for it to arrive i've been doing a fair amount of research on the web. now that the book is here, i am amazed to find the content is almost completely taken from local chamber of commerce's web pages. the sections in this book are less detailed summaries of what information you would get off of local commerce and tourism sites. so much so that many phrases used would result in a plagiarism lawsuit had they not changed one of the words in the paragraph. after reading this book i seriously doubt ellen clark or ray riegert have ever even been to the l a area. i strongly advise you don't make the same mistake i did. look for a different book, or do as the authors did and simply use the internet. for the only way the information in this book would be considered "hidden" is if you have no internet acces. if that's the case, then this review won't save you any money.

Hidden San Diego: Including La Jolla, the Zoo, San Diego County Beaches, and Tijuana (Hidden Travel) Review

Hidden San Diego: Including La Jolla, the Zoo, San Diego County Beaches, and Tijuana (Hidden Travel)

I'm planning a trip to San Diego and I needed some ideas about what to actually do while I'm there. I already knew that I'd want to go to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. I also knew that I wanted to spend some time at the beach and find a good historical park or museum. Apart from that, I was completely lost.
Hidden San Diego came to my rescue. I immediately opened this book to the section of the city where I'll be staying. I quickly came to realize that I could easily spend my entire vacation without leaving that community. There were plenty of things to do and see. After I felt confident that I could find my way around in that little section, I quickly expanded my searches to areas further away.
Still, probably my favorite portion of this book was the sections on dining. It's hard to find a good place to eat in an unfamiliar city. Then, if you are lucky enough to serendipitously find a good restaurant, you tend to stick to that one place and have to endure one type of cuisine for the entire trip. The restaurant advice in Hidden San Diego is like having a good friend who knows all of the best places to eat. No matter what your budget, what kind of atmosphere you'd prefer, or what type of fare you are feeling like this book has enough choices that you never have to eat at the same place twice.

This guide scored an A+! Every place it suggested was great, and the information was always helpful. We had this book, Lets Go, Zagat San Fran (which didn't even have many of the recommended restaurants listed), and Fodors. This one was by far the best. By then end of our 2 week trip, we had stopped using all the other books. I ended up giving all but this one away. The only thing I would change is the maps. They were not very detailed. I would recommend getting this book and then a detailed San Fran and surrounding area map from a gas station when you get there.

David Page may have invented a new genre - the literary travel guide. His book starts with natural and cultural history - "Contexts" - the back-stories to the remarkable places he describes in graceful language.
Page has skied, climbed, walked or driven to all of these places and this shows in the how-to-get-there chapter called "Into the Hills".
Each area chapter, Death Valley, Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia Kings Canyon and Yosemite, has more context stories and exhaustive listing of places to eat and stay, and things to see and do. The book is crammed with details: you can get rattlesnake empanasas at the Furnace Creek Inn, the location of the only Indian restaurant between LA and Carson City in Nevada, where to check the white-water flows on the Kaweah River, the temperature of Keogh Hot Springs and much more.
Describing the highest, lowest, snowiest, driest, sunniest, and arguably some of the most beautiful places in the US, this book is a splendid resource for exploring a remarkable land. This is a book worth reading, even if you never get to visit these places. But I hope you do.

This guide gave me all of the information I needed to have a wonderful vacation. The information was candid, and thoughtfully presented. There were many tidbits of information/ sights I would never had thought to see if it wasn't for this book. My vacation consisted of renting a car at LAX touring along the coast (stopping at places recommended in the guide) Heading down to San Diego and then returning to LAX by traveling inland and seeing Temecula etc. It was a fun filled 10 days and all I used was this guide. This book was one of the only ones we found that covered San Fran and other northern CA destinations. Very good overviews, but not a huge amount of detail, so you will need additional information on some of the destinations. For Ex, it lists the main hikes in Yosemite, but doesn't give details about how long, how hard, which ones are best, etc. Same with wineries - it lists them out, but doesn't do extensive reviews.
