Rick Steves' Eastern Europe Review

Rick Steves' Eastern Europe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the fourth Rick Steves' guidebook I've purchased for my summer trip to Europe (Europe Through the Back Door, Best of Europe, Italy, Eastern Europe). In general, his guidebooks are very easy to read, and he gives practical information. Specifically, the Best of Eastern Europe gives great information on touristy and non-touristy sites. I emailed a guide he recommended for my trip to Krakow (Andrew). Andrew was very helpful, and I've already booked him as my tour guide for my time there. Rick is right--Eastern Europe is a lot cheaper than Western Europe. Rick's suggestions on lodging and restaurants is really good. He focuses on areas in which you would normally want to visit.

Hidden Kauai: Including Hanalei, Princeville and Poipu Review

Hidden Kauai: Including Hanalei, Princeville and Poipu

I just wish there could have been more beaches and detail. I found more places I wanted to swim just by looking at the big map I had along. Compared to all the other books for this island this one, for the money, is the thinnest with the least information.
Princeville didn't strike me as being very Hawaiian. It was a manicured housing development.

Food Wine Rome (Terroir Guides) Review

Food Wine Rome (Terroir Guides)

As a Rome-based food and travel writer I am one of the harshest critics when it comes to guide books about Italy in general, and Rome in particular. So it is with great pleasure that I can heartily recommend Food Wine Rome to anyone looking for a guide book to great food in Rome. David Downie has managed to include the city's hidden secrets as well as reveal new details about it's much loved culinary history. This is the book to buy to discover out-of-the-way cookie factories, pasta stores and hole-in-the-wall trattorie. It makes a great gift for anyone traveling to Rome, or for those who just want to know more about Roman food.

Food Wine Rome is a tightly focused guidebook and traveler’s companion to the culinary delights of Rome. For each neighborhood, listings are in three categories: 1) dining: restaurants, trattorie, osterie; 2) gourmet shopping: bakeries, markets, salami makers, cheesemongers, and more; 3) wine: shops and wine bars. A dozen or more sidebars add entertaining and informative bits of city lore, culture, customs, quotes, and anecdotes to bring alive the city’s historic culinary richness: the Roman love affair with artichokes; the watermelon festival held for years on August 24, when giant, ripe watermelons would be released into the river upstream and Roman kids would dive into the river to grab them; Lucullus’ Kitchen Garden; the Cacio e Pepe Family of Pastas; the cult of the strawberries of Nemi (one of whose devotees was Caligula); Papal cuisine; the Renaissance of Rome’s wines; Holy Water and the Aqueducts; Spring Fever (lamb, favas, artichokes, zucchini flowers); and dozens more.A glossary of essential Roman/Italian food terms helps make shopping, marketing, and eating fun and rewarding. It is illustrated with scores of atmospheric photographs and an overall map of central Rome, plus detailed maps for each of Rome’s nine central neighborhoods, so that readers can find addresses immediately.

Alaska Best Places: Restaurants, Lodgings, and Adventure (Best Places Alaska) Review

Alaska Best Places: Restaurants, Lodgings, and Adventure (Best Places Alaska)

I have to admit. I went to Alaska alone without a guidebook. But I had a great time anyway! When I came home, I decided to go back again, but this time with a guidebook. After going through many of the guides, we choose this one, because it was written by people who live and work in Alaska. It's full of practical tips ("Bears and Humans), offbeat trivia ("Chicken"), and subtle information ("Eskimo Etiquette"). From small towns way up north, to the rugged beauty of the Kenai Peninsula, and to the urban fun of Anchorage, this guide covers it all. Read this, and you'll be calling the airlines to book your flight the next week!
