(More customer reviews)I just wish there could have been more beaches and detail. I found more places I wanted to swim just by looking at the big map I had along. Compared to all the other books for this island this one, for the money, is the thinnest with the least information.
Princeville didn't strike me as being very Hawaiian. It was a manicured housing development.

I particularly like the separate highlighted areas that point out things that the author feels you really shouldn't miss on your trip. The book covers activities, food and lodging. Although it doesn't say specifically how much things cost, it does give a general price range, as in "moderate to ultra deluxe". I think this book will help any visitor to the Palm Springs area find and see things they might otherwise miss.

(More customer reviews)David gives just about any information anyone would want to know about the 50 top cooking schools across the U.S. Nonetheless, he notes in the Introduction that this should not be taken as the "final word" since personnel can change and the classes at most schools change too to reflect new trends and interests. So before signing up for classes or traveling to go to a cooking school, one should call to get the latest information on these matters which can change. Nonetheless, the cautionary, commonsense note does not compromise the basic, reliable information making up nearly all the content. Most cooking schools are based on an individual cook who was their founder or connected to an acclaimed restaurant--factors which do not change and are the main reason for interest in a particular school. There's also the basic information about location. Many readers wishing to upgrade their cooking skills and knowledge will be glad to learn about superior cooking schools not far away; or perhaps ones in places where they always wanted to take a vacation. Costs, length of classes, choices of classes at a school, format (demonstration or hands-on), class size, and contact are basics one would want to plan attending one of the schools.
Beyond such practical considerations, the background of the head of the school or in some cases its group of instructors and synopsis of the school's philosophy help readers select a school matching their ideas or aims in cooking. Diane Carlson, owner of the Conscious Gourmet school in Greenwich, CT, was motivated to become a chef by health problems of hers including blood pressure and mood swings. At the Woodlands Resort and Inn in South Carolina, there are demonstrations of specialized aspects of cooking such as "how to use artisanal salts and exotic peppercorns from around the world to enlarge flavor."
Cooks need not even be planning attending a school to enjoy and gain from the book. Also the majority of listings have a representative recipe from the school, in some cases two, making a total of 53 widely varied recipes. Joe David has written many articles on cuisine for periodicals from newspapers to in-flight magazines.

Competing titles do cover the basic steps to opening a B&B, but this book takes you way beyond the basic business details and then gives the information you need to understand how to market an inn on the Internet. This is HUGE! This new book is a comprehensive guide for anyone wanting to get "heads-in-the-beds" at a new inn or an exisiting one. I love the secton on increasing Web site traffic and how optimize your Web site from a marketing perspective -- something lacking in the other titles on this hospitality subject.

*All the business basics are there in the first few chapters.
*Experienced innkeepers have added tips and hints for success.
*The Internet is explained in great detail, as it relates to innkeeping.
*The marketing on the Internet guidelines are well explained.

(More customer reviews)We keep a copy of this book in our guest room. Lots of people who have stayed with us have used it and have been very happy with the information it contains (short trips to take or activities to do in and around the Seattle area).
My only criticism is that the section with restaurant recommendations is lacking -- but the dining culture of Seattle changes so frequently that this isn't a significant negative for a general-purpose "Best Places" book.
