Hospitality 2010: The Future of Hospitality and Travel Review

Hospitality 2010: The Future of Hospitality and Travel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many different kinds of books about future trends. Some talk about the future as some radical break from the present. These usually become dated quickly as the future ends up being a lot more like the present than the prediction. Think about the 1960s predictions of flying cars or world wide collapse by the 1980s. We are still driving internal combustion cars on highways and while there are terrible tragedies such as Rwanda, Ethiopia, and the Sudan, most people in the world are living better lives than their ancestors.
Other books on predictions look carefully at the present and what trends seem to be emerging. They then look at what factors might prefer one trend over the other and then make their predictions. Their predictions tend to be more near term than the books on vast and radical change. This book is of this kind.
The book consists of nine easy to read and informative chapters in two parts and five very helpful appendices as well as an index. The first part sets up the context for hospitality and is called "Common Concerns for the Hospitality Industry". The second part goes through the industry sector by sector and is sensibly called "Sector Forecasts".
The first chapter sets the stage by looking at the present situation in the world (the book looks at the global trends in hospitality). The reader gets a number of lists of countries on various trends in political stability, internal population, environment, education, crime, and more. The second chapter explains why these factors look positive for the future take off in hospitality. The authors see a coming strong world wide economic recovery with hospitality being one of the fastest growing sectors. They also see the growing use of Internet as a support for the growth of travel rather than people staying at home and communicating over the web instead. They believe the greater opportunities for global commerce through the Web will require more skilled workers who will have to be outsourced around the globe and will require travel to support more global operations.
Chapter three provides the reader with trends in security and business considerations in the age of terror. Security issues for persons and data will continue to grow. Most of their information is sound and practical. However, they saw oil staying stable at $25-$28 per barrel and prices above that as unsustainable. Oops.
Chapter four begins the sector forecasts. Chapter four talks about the expansion of tourism and chapter five is about business travel - MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions. Chapter six discusses the huge growth in the cruise industry while chapter seven discusses the troubled times ahead for the airlines. Chapter eight is of most interest to me because my company sells pre-screening assessment services in the hospitality industry and primarily to restaurants (yes, email me!). The news is pretty good for restaurants if you are going big or staying small. They see the mid-sized chains getting squeezed out. We shall see. The last chapter takes a brief look at decades to come.
Appendix A is an excellent look at 52 trends shaping the future. This deserves close reading and some time thinking about what they authors have to offer here. Appendix B provides some criteria you can use to evaluate national stability in any market you are thinking of. Appendix C lists Hospitality Associations and Publications with contact info - very valuable. And Appendix D lists college programs in hospitality with websites. Also useful.
These books never get the future right. They aren't really supposed to. What they are for is to help you see the present a little more clearly and maybe a present wave you can hop on to ride for awhile and to avoid getting swamped by another wave you didn't see.

The Spirit to Serve Marriott's Way Review

The Spirit to Serve Marriott's Way
Average Reviews:

I stayed at a Marriott in Denver last week and found a copy of this book in the nightstand. I expected it to be hogwash and instead found it to be the most useful business book I've ever read. It is a quick read (about 150 pages, not the 240 mentioned in the Amazon catalog). It is entertaining without being self-indulgent and informative without being preachy. The anecdotes revealed an appropriate level of introspection (my one quibble is that Mr. Marriott claims that his family and faith come before business and yet also describes himself as a workaholic). I'm not in the hospitality industry and yet I found dozens of parallels to my own business (computer software and book publishing). Most interesting were the frank assessments of Marriott's business mistakes. He truly used them as an opportunity to learn. The book is chock full of excellent and thought-provoking strategies and totally devoid of the cheesy buzzwords so prevalent in, say, the latest Tom Peters books. Although I have no association with Marriott, the book will cause me to examine the entire service industry in a new light.

Accounting for Hospitality Industry Review

Accounting for Hospitality Industry

This book is pricey and comes up on top of the stack when you search in Google or Amazon.
This book basically explains Accounting in general but there is nothing specific to Hospitality industry. For example what type of accounting information is maintained in a Property (Hotel) and what type of accounting information is maintained in back office ERP etc.
I'm still searching for a better book.

Ok I know that this sounds bad. But this book is really detailed. Which is good. The bad part is most of the detail is information repeated over and over. If they would just say what they need to say one time the book would not be so expensive and thick. I know that they could get rid of at least 100 pages because of all the repeated items in the book.

Start Your Own Bed & Breakfast (Start Your Own Bed & Breakfast) Review

Start Your Own Bed and Breakfast (Start Your Own Bed and Breakfast)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[reposted from a comment]
Apparently, the product description does this book a disservice. The authors recognize that most folks who dream of opening a B&B don't realize how much work it's going to be, which is why they remind the reader of this on **nearly every page.** There are fairly detailed worksheets for nearly every aspect of the business, outlining all the little things a B&B owner needs to think about. The realities of what running a B&B would entail comprise the majority of the book.
Most of all, the authors recommend not jumping straight in, but apprenticing oneself to an existing B&B for a few months to a year, to learn the business and see if you've got the temperament for it.
My only problem with this book is that the authors consistently refer back to the basic Entrepreneur Press How to Start a Business manual, rather than go into detail about some of processes not specific to running a B&B. I know they did it to keep this book shorter, but it felt like they were pushing you to buy that other book, where they could have made this one richer instead. If it weren't for this, I'd have given this book 5 stars.
For all the effervescently sunny and (a bit) cheesy tone, it's actually a very practical and helpful manual. I got this first edition from my public library (to see if it's worth buying), and now I'm waiting for the second edition to arrive so I can compare the two.

Hospitality World: An Introduction (Hospitality, Travel and Tourism)
Average Reviews:

Dreadful, goofy and painfully outdated. Although it was published in 1995 or 1996, it reads like it was written in 1966 sometimes. The same four or five concepts are reiterated throughout the text, so there isn't even much basic educational content. The authors' rather obvious political bent gets quite old, quite quickly, as well.

This is a good book if you are new to the industry, either as a student or as practitioner. The book covers nearly all relevant subjects. Herein lies the problem. Everything is covered, but there is no real focus or depth. If you need more than the basics, you will have to look elsewhere.
To summarize, if you need a toolkit or a how to do guide, this book is not it. If you need a basic intro level book, then the book will do. I am thirlled with this new book. Competing titles do cover the basic steps to opening a B&B, but this book takes you way beyond the basic business details and then gives the information you need to understand how to market an inn on the Internet. This is HUGE! This new book is a comprehensive guide for anyone wanting to get "heads-in-the-beds" at a new inn or an exisiting one. I love the secton on increasing Web site traffic and how optimize your Web site from a marketing perspective -- something lacking in the other titles on this hospitality subject.
PROS:
*All the business basics are there in the first few chapters.
*Experienced innkeepers have added tips and hints for success.
*The Internet is explained in great detail, as it relates to innkeeping.
*The marketing on the Internet guidelines are well explained.

CON:
*The author just begins to explain blogging, I'd like to see more on this topic.

Hotel Design, Planning, and Development, New Edition Review

WOW! I have a copy of the 1980s version of Rutes and Penner--this is a totally new edition, all new photography, etc.--and consider it the 'Bible' for hotel design. But the new edition is twice as big and full of current examples and information. It has 32 pages of gorgeous color photos of great hotels and resorts from around the world. The text is in three main sections: Hotel Types (downtown, resorts, conference centers, luxury hotels, casino hotels, etc.); Design Guide (planning and design information for all areas of the hotel); and Development Guide (feasibility, programming, future trends). In addition, there are lots of appendices and sidebars from such people as Ian Schrager, I.M. Pei, Robert Stern, and John Portman. I've looked at other hotel design books in the stores and there isn't anything that is so complete or current. There are other books on boutique hotels, with lots of pictures, but nothing with this global coverage of all types of lodging properties. With well over 400 pages, this book will be the new Bible for hotel design. I can't imagine a better choice for anyone involved with the hotel development, architecture, or interior design.

Hospitality Law: Managing Legal Issues in the Hospitality Industry Review

Hospitality Law: Managing Legal Issues in the Hospitality Industry

As President & CEO of the Texas Hotel and Motel Association, I have known Stephen Barth as a revered professor of hospitality law at the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, as a tremendously popular seminar leader, and now, I am pleased to say, as an outstanding author.
His book, Hospitality Law, provides an up-to-date information source that can teach practicing hospitality managers and students how to avoid and minimize legal difficulties they might otherwise face in the running of lodging properties. The book is well written, easy to follow, and best of all, gives examples from the actual operations of lodging and restaurant establishments. Especially strong are the sections on contract law, safety and security, and employment issues.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the legal issues that arise in the everyday decisions that a lodging property professional must make.

Revenue Management for the Hospitality Industry Review

Revenue Management for the Hospitality Industry

Hayes and Miller know their stuff and it shows. Their customer-centric approach to pricing is unique, much needed, and spot-on for today's economy.
I recommend this text to any serious revenue manager or pricing manager in the hospitality industry who wants to avoid falling into the "spiral down" approach to pricing hospitality products and services that too often occurs in a weakened market.
Based on my experiences in lodging and restaurant businesses, Hayes and Miller's approach of maintaining price integrity both in strong and in depressed market environments is much needed to avoid the discounting mania sometimes practiced by revenue managers who are not knowledgeable about the complex relationship between service levels, selling price and perceived value.
This book is a must-buy for anyone interested in knowing more about revenue management!

This is the first text that has been developed specifically to examine what revenue managers in the hospitality industry must know and do to be successful. Numerous cases and practical examples are used to illustrate revenue management concepts. Chapter ending questions and problems help them perform the calculations and practice the decision-making skills that are used in the field. RM in Action shows how the revenue management principles can be clearly illustrated using real-world examples reported in various news outlets. RM on the Web offers sites listed on the Internet to provide supplemental information about a topic or issue. Hotel Management and Operations Review

Hotel Management and Operations
Average Reviews:

My review is based on having used Dr. Rutherford's book the past consecutive 7 semesters (incl summer) at Hawaii Pacific University's Travel Industry Management program.
The compilation of articles is ideal for us because chapters are short, but comprehensive and interesting enough to retain student attention. 95% of my students are foreigners, and my average class size is 30 students from at least a dozen countries.
Chapters have numerous references, and all the chapters have challenging case studies except Finance.
This particular construction lends itself to a variety of delivery techniques, as stated in the Preface.
My wish list for the 3rd edition would include: an instructor's manual or workbook, a testbank of questions, e-book version, reducing the content on Marketing (almost double the amount of information in other chapters), and adding a section on Information Technology.
Students, educators, and hospitality professionals will enjoy a favorable ROI on this purchase.
