On a recent trip a few weeks ago from Chicago to Needles, CA on Route 66 we used this book extensively. All motels and restaurants listed in the book were exactly as promised. We were never disappointed. If you prefer to sleep and eat at NON-franchised establishemnts - you need this book. There are franchised motels listed, but there are several Mom n' Pop motels & cafes still operating. Even if your not traveling the Mother Road, most places are just a very short drive off of the boring interstate highways. Look for these places - you WILL enjoy the change of pace.

Although this book claims to be an "ALL NEW 3rd EDITION," I found it completely outdated. Most all the hotels I have contacted from San Luis Obispo to La Jolla, do not take pets, and haven't for years. For instance, in the La Jolla section, all 6 hotels listed as taking pets, do not. If you're really looking for hotels that take pets, with this book, you're barking up the wrong tree.

Overall, a well-organized introduction to the high points (and high life) of Southern CA. Excellent "mini-tour" suggestions, complete with stop-by-stop itineraries. Could use a bit of polish on specifics, like festival dates and contact info, but otherwise, a great planning resource. Focus is primarily on upscale establishments, hotels and eateries, definitely not for those who are looking to do "California on $25 a day"....

Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings
Average Reviews:

This is an obscure little book (which pairs charmingly with Mrs. Lirriper's Legacy) that most storefront book sellers don't have. Sadly, it's a quick read, because you'll want to linger over every chapter. It's delightful and heartwarming (if you'll forgive such a banal adjective) and is one of my favorites. Add this to your Dickens shelf and you'll always be glad you have it handy,

"Mrs. Lirriper's Lodging" unwaveringly presents Charles Dickens' idealistic approach. It tells the story of an affectionate, humanistic lady Mrs. Emma Lirriper. She has come out of the pit of suffering and distress with new optimistic vision. The story beautifully intertwines the themes of humanism, faith in the final outcome of human endeavor and a need to trust in fellowmen.

I compared this book to every other travel book in the store and it by far had more information (500 pages of text). The format is easy to follow by region and it lists many of the smaller cities in each region. The maps offer are clear and the descriptions accurate. I've used this book to prepare for several trips to France (all in the outskirts of small towns) and have found it helpful each time.

Best Places Northern California: Restaurants, Lodgings, Touring Review

Best Places Northern California: Restaurants, Lodgings, Touring
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a big fan of the "Best Places" series for years, and have enjoyed awesome trips in San Diego and the Pacific N.W. thanks to these guidebooks. But I was disappointed in the "Northern California" edition. I know, it's a guide to "best" places and as such will probably lean heavily toward the pricier establishments. And Northern California tends to be a pricey place. But while most of the other "Best Places" books include a wide range of places, from great ethnic hole-in-the-wall eateries to five-star dining experiences, this particular volume just piles on the five-star recommendations. You'll be hard pressed to find, for example, a basic breakfast hangout, a good sandwich joint, and ESPECIALLY a lodging [for a reasonable price]. If all I want to do is patronize the trendiest and priciest, what do I need a guidebook for? Anyone can find the chic places; a guidebook should help a visitor nose out the less-discovered treasures. Also, the oh-so-trendy, oh-so-chic, been-there-done-that-seen-it-all-eaten-it-all tone of the writing gets a little wearing after awhile. Buy some of the other Best Places guides, but look elsewhere if you want something more comprehensive for Northern California.

The Newsboys' Lodging-House: or The Confessions of William James--A Novel Review

The Newsboys' Lodging-House: or The Confessions of William James--A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The gifted philosopher and psychologist William James suffered a mental collapse at age thirty. This fact is well known by anyone familiar with James' works, but what remains unclear is what happened during his convalescence. "Twenty-one pages (as much as forty-two pages of writing)" were cut from James' diary that surely held some answers about his dark hour. Thankfully we have Jon Boorstin who writes so well from James' point of view that we need to be reminded these writings are actually not James' confessions but historical fiction. "The Newsboys' Lodging House" brilliantly extrapolates upon the missing pages to form a cohesive and believable account of what led James to become the renowned modern thinker and progenitor of Pragmatism and the Will to Believe.
The novel jumpstarts in 1908 Cambridge with a stranger imploring an attention-grabbing question, "Is you my father?" That teaser grabs the reader's unequivocal attention as James elegantly recalls how one chance encounter at McLean Asylum in 1872 with Horatio Alger, a writer of boys' stories, inspires him to leave the asylum and research "the question of evil" among the poor newsboys of New York City.
Boorstin has magically crept into James' psyche and delights us page after page despite many somber expositions that detail James' anguish over evil's place in the world. Reading in fact becomes compulsory as we eagerly await an answer to the stranger's aforementioned question. In the meantime, Boorstin expresses James' ideations in an entertaining manner and more succinctly than several philosophical tomes.
Bohdan Kot

Hot Showers, Soft Beds, and Dayhikes in the Sierra: Walks and Strolls Near Lodgings (Hot Showers, Soft Beds, & Dayhikes in the Sierra: Walks &) Review

Hot Showers, Soft Beds, and Dayhikes in the Sierra: Walks and Strolls Near Lodgings (Hot Showers, Soft Beds, and Dayhikes in the Sierra: Walks and)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an outstanding guide--the best I've run across--for anyone planning a Sierra vacation that won't be consisting entirely of backpacking. There is somewhat of a greater emphasis on the eastern Sierra, but the whole range is pretty thoroughly covered--in two long chapters on the eastern and western regions and four shorter chapters on the northern Sierra. (Yosemite gets split into two parts, one devoted entirely to hikes off State Road 120--the Tioga Pass road.) The book is written with real warmth, intelligence, and good humor. The trail descriptions, including directions to the trailhead, are lively, detailed and accurate, with good maps, though there's not a great deal of information on the fauna, flora, and geology. The introductory chapters, tables, and appendices are very helpful. There's a good bibliography and detailed reading recommendations for each region. I suppose some readers may quibble about hikes that were omitted, but for the areas I'm familiar with, the author made good choices.
As far as the lodgings go, all the necessary information is provided, including altitude. But while they are divided into two categories, "mountain" and "of interest" (a third category, "other," mentions any nearby town), the resorts are not rated, regrettably. The author says she's easy to please and is happy to be anywhere in the Sierra, but it would be nice if the next edition at least singled out those in particularly attractive settings.
Otherwise this a first-rate trail guide--like having an enthusiastic and knowledgeable companion at your side (or in your daypack).

With this book in hand, hikers can spend their days wandering in wildflower meadows, hiking to cragged peaks, or swimming in cobalt-blue lakes in the Sierra Nevada, and then settle into a comfortable deck chair at sunset to enjoy the alpenglow. Roughing it has never been so easy. Hot Showers, Soft Beds, & Dayhikes in the Sierra describes 112 carefully chosen dayhikes in Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, John Muir, Ansel Adams, Desolation, and Emigrant wilderness areas, and more. Every hike listed is in close proximity to one or more quality accommodations. Many hikes have easy through strenuous options, so you can choose the right level for you. Over 80 nearby cabins, B&Bs, motels, condos, lodges, guest ranches, and resorts are described, along with the local communities, so you'll know exactly what to expect and where to find services. The fully updated third edition is completely reorganized and redesigned, making both the hiking and the lodging information easier to access. Families with young children, active seniors, and anyone who prefers indoor comfort over camping will appreciate this specially targeted hiking guide.

Oh my. This book is wonderful. I have been a collector of postcards for 25 years of my hometown. I was just becoming interested in Roadside Americana (Gas Stations, Motels, Restaurants, and odd roadside attractions) from the 1920s to the early 1960s when I discovered Baeder's book in the 1980s. I bought it and immediately became addicted to Roadside postcards.
This book is out-of-print now, but if you ever have a chance of buying the book...- buy it!! And what a great artist Baeder is. Some of his Roadside paintings are in the book also.
