How the Other Half Lives, Special Illustrated Edition Review

How the Other Half Lives, Special Illustrated Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How did our grandfathers and great-grandfathers (and great-great, I suppose) survive immigration and the slums? What was life like on the Lower East Side of New York? For those of us whose family has only been in the US for a few generations, this is a must-read. Whether Irish, Italian, Jewish, Chinese or Polish, German, Russian, hordes of refugees ended up in New York on the promise of a better life.
Reading Riis' book reads like the newspaper in some ways; entrepreneurs lured poor people from Eastern Europe and contracted out their labor in sweat shops in the US. Sound familiar? But what is not so familiar are the living conditions in the tenements, dark, unventilated cages in blocks of buildings that rented for a surprising high rent to people who died by the thousands in the unsanitary conditions. Farm animals had it better. Why was rent so high? Supply and demand. Cheaper rent was to be had in Brooklyn and the outlying (as yet unincorporated) boroughs, but the WORK was in Manhattan, where you could get by as a tailor, a seamstress, a peddler or in some illegitimate activity.
The conditions will make you cry; the story of foundling babies (abandoned newborns) is astonishing. A cradle was put outside a Catholic Church and instead of a baby each night, racks of babies appeared. The Church had to establish foundling hospitals run by nuns, who persuaded the unwed or impoverished mothers to nurse the baby they gave up, plus another baby (women can usually nurse two, though these malnourished women must have been hard-pressed.) The child mortality rate, especially in the "back tenements" or buildings built on to the back of others (dark and airless) was incredible.
I wish the plates in the book were of better quality; Riis took many photographs, but the reproduction here is poor and they are hard to see. I recommend that if you are interested in this subject from seeing "The Gangs of New York" or for genealogical reasons, that you visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and see the buildings for yourself. Even cleaned up and no longer packed with unwashed people, they are heart-rending.

How the Other Half Lives was a pioneering work of photojournalism by Jacob Riis, documenting the squalid living conditions in New York City slums in the 1880s. It served as a basis for future muckraking journalism by exposing the slums to New York City's upper and middle class. How The Other Half Lives quickly became a landmark in the annals of social reform. Riis documented the filth, disease, exploitation, and overcrowding that characterized the experience of more than one million immigrants. He helped push tenement reform to the front of New York's political agenda, and prompted then-Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt to close down the police-run poor houses. Roosevelt later called Riis "the most useful citizen of New York".Riis's idea inspired Jack London to write a similar exposé on London's East End, called People of the Abyss.

Frommer's Panama (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Panama (Frommer's Complete)

On a recent trip to Costa Rica and Panama we took Lonely Planet's Costa Rica and Frommer's Panama. If you are a traveler who carries a backpack, takes local buses, and stays in hostels and small hotels, this is not the book for you. During our trip from we felt that Frommer's Panama was nearly useless to use as a guidebook at all, especially coming from the very informative Lonely Planet's Costa Rica. The Frommer's guide would work great for families with medium to large budgets, cruise ship passengers, businessman, or travelers looking for a more luxury and shuttle van and all inclusive tour type of experience in Panama. This book really only talks about the expensive hotels and activities. All the sample travel itineraries are catered to people who can spend a few hundred a day on their adventure. Smaller towns are not covered (many are not even mentioned) and there are no maps showing you where the internet cafes, laundry, or even banks are. The book only talks about the sit down restaurants when there are tiny sodas sprinkled throughout every town with wonderful and cheap food. In short: Not for backpackers, but fine for room-service types.

The Dead And The Innocent: True Crime 1692 (Volume 3) Review

The Dead And The Innocent: True Crime 1692 (Volume 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Review of the Dead and the Innocent
Melrose Books, Cambridge
Austin Kehoe, Commissioning Editor
"Only a few pages in, the author has accomplished several key tasks. The situation of Mistress Vanwicke, her character, and that of Henry Harrison (both of them somewhat vain, and with irascible, even violent tempers) have been established. The plot premise is likewise well set out and its development got well under way. Similarly, the historical setting has been established, with an economy of description which nevertheless evokes the period very satisfactorily. The interview with the attorney is a startling scene. Horrified that Doctor Clenche expects a mortgage on her house as security on the loan, Mistress Vanwick attacks the attorney, to the savage amusement of Harrison.
In conclusion this is an unusual, indeed quite original approach to fiction. The fictionalisation of true historical stories has been done before, of course, but I have never before come across an example where the source material is included as part of the work. This is valuable on a number of levels. Allowing readers to make up their own minds about the unmediated testimony is a novelty. Likewise, one is able to compare the transcript with the fictionalised story. Finally, it is nice to have the opportunity to read a period transcript featuring characters whom we have grown to know with the intimacy only fiction can offer.
Altogether, this is a very well conceived novel, and the author has carried off her audacious concept with great aplomb. I found it absorbing and utterly fascinating.
Review from Discovered Authors of Mayfair:
I have just been reading the extracts from your novel The Dead and the Innocent, and have found your writing concise yet evocative, the key to good storytelling. The era you have chosen is a particularly interesting one, characterised by change in all spheres, and your story is a great snapshot of the time. You have clearly done your research on this, capturing the atmosphere of late seventeenth century London well. Crime is, of course, one of the most popular genres of literature, and your book's basis on truth adds an extra dimension, sure to appeal to many.
Review by Zoetrope Reviewer
You clearly have command of the tale, Barbara and the particular mannerisms and speech of the time. I love your very stylish writing and your artistic flair for the language; you're clearly a historical writer of some merit.

The story takes place in a oneyear time span in 1692, and is based on a true story. Harrison, the accused, maintained that he wasplaying the card game, 'Penny A Corner', with friends in Chancery Lane, London,on the night of the murder of Doctor Andrew Clenche of Brownlow Street.Henry Harrison a Londongentleman, befriended Mistress Vanwicke, who also knew Doctor Andrew Clenche.A maid observed that Harrisoncarried a handkerchief made of a coarse material which she thought was notfitting for a man of his quality and she became suspicious of him, which formedthe basis of the accusation against Harrison. The doctor was murdered and HenryHarrison was accused, thrown into Newgate Prison to await trial, and was thenbrought before the Old Bailey criminal court in London. (The trial of HenryHarrison appears at the back of the book), courtesy of Old Bailey online. All evidence at the trial pointedto Harrison, but a second man was still at large. Harrison was tried at the Old Bailey.Evidence used against him was the aforementioned handkerchief. One of Harrison's crucialwitnesses, an apprentice shoemaker, was abducted by three soldiers one evening, after he had given evidence before the trial, to say that he would recogniseHarrison by his voice.Another man, Master Miller, confessed on his deathbed, to his wife, that he had committed the murder ofDoctor Clenche, and a second man was arrested and tried at the Old Bailey. Since a dead man is no evidencethe second man was set free. The twistto the story is that two men dressed as soldiers were seen drinking in The BlueBoar tavern, near Chancery Lane, London, on the night of the murder: (one ofthem was Mr. Miller), who had been absent from the tavern at the time of themurder. Was Henry Harrison convicted ofthe Murder of Doctor Andrew Clenche, or was he set free by the Judge and Jurorsof The Old Bailey, London? This book is also on sale under the title, The Innocent Master Harrison, 280 pages. isbn (13) 978-1456413538, and is also available on Kindle, Amazon.com, and Amazon.co.uk

I like this book very much. It has all the information I needed for planning a trip to some hot spots. Besides that it has beautiful color photos as well and therefore it is a pity that the paper is rather thin and the size rather small.
But OK, the book had to be a guide in the first place and therefore limited in size and weight, but the book is also nice to watch the pictures.

The Unofficial Guide to Bed & Breakfasts in California Review

The Unofficial Guide to Bed and Breakfasts in California
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guidebook was an eye opener for someone whose previous impression of B&Bs was that they were usually in a small, refurbished Victorian home operated by a friendly couple. Quaint, forced conviviality, no real privacy, and certainly not for me.
Well, that's all changed. The authors' entertaining and informative style made me feel like some particularly knowledgeable (and trusted) old friends were sharing their candid comments about B&Bs all over California. They've covered a full range of accommodations, styles, and prices. It's obvious that the authors are well travelled and have given a great deal of thought to each listing. Since I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest places to stay and yet want my money's worth, I particularly like the Room Quality and Value ratings.
In addition to providing all the information I needed to plan my next trip, this was a good "read". The colorful descriptions made me want to visit some of the areas just to visit that B&B! This book is a must for anyone looking for unique and interesting places to stay while travelling through California.

The Unofficial Guides are the Consumer Reports of travel guides, offering candid evaluations of their destinations' attractions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, sports, and more, all rated and ranked by a team of unbiased inspectors so even the most compulsive planners can be sure they're spending their time and money wisely. Each guide addresses the needs of everyone from families to business travelers, with handy charts that demonstrate how each place stacks up against the competition. Plus, all the details are pulled out so they're extremely easy to scan.
The Unofficial Guide to Bed & Breakfasts in California takes a refreshingly honest, critical look at the best B&Bs in the Golden State. Instead of just saying nice things about every inn, as some guides do, it actually rates each B&B, looking at factors like value and quality of rooms, and offers truly comparative descriptions. Includes a photo insert of our top-rated inns and lovely illustrations of 50 properties.
Five Reasons Why This Is the Best B&B Series You Can Buy:
Complete Coverage: Profiles and evaluations of 300 top inns and B&Bs in all price categories, from budget to deluxe, plus a directory of 250 other great places to stay
Critical Evaluations: Objective ratings and rankings of each B&B (other B&B guides read like promotional brochures)
Personal Inspections: Each B&B is personally inspected by independent travel professionals (most other B&B guides are written by the innkeepers themselves)
Honest Selection Process: Each B&B chosen on its own merits; no fees are accepted (most other B&B guides charge innkeepers to be included)
Ideal for Families & Pet Lovers: Only the Unofficial Guides identify pet- and kid-friendly places, and recommend the best rooms

Adventures in Nature: Panama (Adventures in Nature Series) Review

Adventures in Nature: Panama (Adventures in Nature Series)
Average Reviews:

Do not, repeat, do not go to Panama without this book. There is little of interest spared from this book. Mr Friar obviously has traveled the paths about which he writes, from the trails in the western highlands of Chrirqui to the bustling streets of Panama City. If he makes a comment such as 'your call', believe me be cautious. We just returned from a 10 day trip that included hiking some of the highland trails. We negotiated roads that should not be driven, and competed for space in streets barely wide enough for our rental van in San Felipe. We hiked trails that require athletic skill and wrestled our way through the market at Sal Si Puede.
The directions are impeccable, and food recommendations are excellent plus still quite current. If he does not write about something it is likely of little interest or non existent. Example: when we lived there from 1994-97, there was a nice artesan market at Stevens Circle at the foot of the canal commission headquarters. We wrongly thought Mr Friar missed it, however,it was not mentioned because it no longer exists. We found it has moved to just up the street from the YMCA on the way to the Bridge of the Americas.
Even as former residents, this book was a truly valuable guide to travel in this quite interesting little country.
