Doin' California with Your Pooch: Eileen's Directory of Dog-Friendly Lodging and Outdoor Adventure in California Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

The manner in which Barish chose to organize her book makes it nearly impossible to use. It is arranged alphabetically by city, regardless of county. When searching for dog-friendly locations within a particular area, it is necessary to know the names of all the surrounding cities. Unless you have a map in front of you while using Barish's book, it is frustrating and virtually useless. In addition, the information in the book is scanty and many times inaccurate. I cannot recommend this book. In fact, I cannot in all good conscience even re-sell the book to an unsuspecting dog lover.

My wife and I drove to southern Baja for the first time this winter. This book was invaluable for helpful tips, places to stay, good and inexpensive restaurants, and local info. It also provided info on how to avoid getting ripped off and some safety tips for driving. The quality of our trip was greatly improved because of this book. I found it to be better than other similar books I have used for travel in other areas. I highly recommend this book for Baja travellers.

This is a good source book if you are strictly looking for help with finding accomodations where your pet can stay with you. There is a short chapter on travel tips-things you need to keep in mind of you are planning to take your pet along in the car or on a plane. There are also listings for national public lands in the US and Canada that allow pets as well as a listing of emergency vet clinics by states. As I stated, this is strictly a resource book. If you're looking for "fun vacation activities with your pet", you'll have to look at a different book, but this is a good starting place when you need to make reservations to spend the night somewhere while on the road.

Best Places Northwest: The Best Restaurants and Lodgings in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia
Average Reviews:

I've had the older edition of this book for years and brought it on every road trip we've ever taken. Certainly it doesn't have every wonderful place you've ever stayed at -- but it has so many that are good it would be foolish not to follow the recommendations it provides.
My only complaint is that some of the wonderful places (which, granted, we never would have found had it not been for this book) have become so difficult to get reservations at that we find this book sometimes does not help for those last minute weekend trips out of town.
That said, if you live in the Northwest, consider this your bible -- from Portland to Vancouver, the Islands, and everywhere in between -- you will always find a reliable recommendation for a good table and a warm bed in the pages of this book.

This is a nice little guidebook, but there's nothing here specifically for cheapskates. I thought I'd find secrets to getting discounts at Disney. Nope! Their big tip for getting a break on your hotel room -- ask the customer service rep if there are any discounts. I didn't need to buy a book to tell me that.
Sehlinger's guide is MUCH better. It gave me enough information to decide for myself what the best values are.

I read this book thinking that I might gain a few ideas that might work. I later learned I totally underestimated its powers! Being a young person I don't have a lot of money, and the money I do have has to be stretched, and this book had excellent ideas on how to do just that. I went to Europe last summer for three months and only spent $3000 (including airfare). If you enjoy traveling and aren't afraid for a little adventure, you should definately look into this book, it's a traveler's greatest companion!

LODGING IN FRANCE'S MONASTERIES - $22.95 Anacapa Press
Travel writer Barish adds a third volume (along with Spain and Italy) to her series on unique and inexpensive accommodations in monasteries, convents and religious guest houses, many of which are located in some of the most beautiful towns and villages in France. Travelers can stay, for example, in a 16th century building just a few feet from Chartres Cathedral or in a former castle in the village of Moulins-les-Metz in Lorraine. Most of the more than 150 institutions profiled accept guests without any religious obligation but some of them offer only spiritual retreats. Each entry includes information on the number of rooms, amenities, cost, availability of meals, any special rules, directions and contact information, and two to four pages on local tourist attractions. The average cost per person per night is $30 (meals may add $5 to the cost) and some monasteries ask only for a donation. Barish has also included a reservation form letter in English and French. This is a worthwhile addition to any travel collection and will intrigue travelers on a strict budget and those who want a holiday with a twist. Linda M. Kaufmann, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Housing and travel availability changes almost day to day and it is difficult to write ahead to plan the move. This book and many versions before it have helped make those plans much easer.
The author has seen the in's and out's of travel from a practical stand point. She has written several books on this subject and related subjects including "Military Space-A Air Basic Training: And Reader Trip Reports" and a book that you will have to search to find written about her two years in Vietnam "Customs and Culture of Vietnam" which is very in-depth.

If you love New York, love the theater and love exploring new restaurants, this guidebook is for you.
Organized by neighborhood, the guide provides listings of restaurants in all price ranges. The author uses a chatty writing style in describing each restaurant. She has a talent for making a place come alive with just a few sentences. Each listing contains examples of items on the menu with prices.
In the introduction, Ms. Watson states the listings are recommendations not reviews. I have come to rely on those recommendations and have never been disapointed.
By far the best of the New York dining guides.

The 2000 Hotel and Lodging Market Research Handbook
Average Reviews:

Very good if specifically looking for info on Hotel Industry Marketing Research
Pricey Yes, but has some good essential info. Not just abstract and philosophical advice on methods like in some self help type marketing books, but also has some real detailed info. For instance it has industry figures and percentages on some obscure items such as how many guests order movies in their rooms, and what types of movies they order (yes it's porn). Also other detailed figures on margins etc.
Definitely a good book to have in your resource library if you are focusing on hotel/hospitality/travel marketing research (if not save your money). As I said, it's a bit pricey. Must be somewhere to get it cheaper?

I was raised in Lancaster County, but I have not lived there regularly in over thirty years, but I do enjoy visiting family and old friends. I bought this book to keep current with a wider set of recommendations. I am very impressed with the large number of listings, the accuracy of those I know, and the number of hard to find establishments included, and, especially, the list of purveyors of homegrown, healthy foods in small towns and the countryside I want to try. This is the best book of its kind I have seen.
