Jack the Ripper (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) Review

Jack the Ripper (Tales of Mystery and the Supernatural)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author is certainly well intentioned but unfortunately has major gaps in his knowledge about the topic. Just a couple of examples: He speaks favorably of Michael Ostrog as a Ripper suspect but doesn't seem to know that he was in France at the time of the murders. He also argues that John Kelly should be considered a strong suspect without putting together that he was out of town picking hops with his lover, Catherine Eddowes, during the time when Ripper victim Annie Chapman was killled.
The author has what can only be described as a major blind spot about his expertise, claiming in the introduction that "I believe I know more about this subject than anyone alive..." Anyone with a copy of a Jack the Ripper encyclopedia or any book by Sugden, Evans, Rumbelow, Odell, or Begg should already know more about the topic than what this book would give you.
In fact, most anyone who has studied the topic for a few years could look at the cover and realize the book has major problems: two of the images that are supposed to be photos of murdered Victorian prostitutes are actually artistic representations by a modern designer and which copied from the Internet without permission.
The only reason I don't rate this as one star is that at least it's not weaving a theory out of bizarre anagrams thought up by the author, believing that a well known hoax diary is real, or trying to blame a conspiracy of royals and Freemasons.

Horrific, horrendous, unspeakable, The Whitechapel Murderer, Jack the Ripper, stalked the streets of East London in 1888, slaughtering prostitutes and bewildering the police who were hunting him. They never succeeded in apprehending him, and to this day the mystery of his identity remains an enigma. But he did leave clues to his identity, and numerous theories have been entertained throughout the one hundred and twenty years since he held London s East End in his grip of terror. This book looks at the evidence left by the murderer and the reports and investigative papers which recorded the atrocities that the ripper performed. It takes time to analyse the existing information and evaluate the letters sent to the police. It is the strongest and most powerful book ever written on the murders. It dispels a lot of myths attached to the Ripper, and eliminates a lot of the previously conjectured perpetrators, leaving only those who realistically could have been... Jack the Ripper.

Hospitality World: An Introduction (Hospitality, Travel and Tourism)

Dreadful, goofy and painfully outdated. Although it was published in 1995 or 1996, it reads like it was written in 1966 sometimes. The same four or five concepts are reiterated throughout the text, so there isn't even much basic educational content. The authors' rather obvious political bent gets quite old, quite quickly, as well.

Cross-Country Skiing California: Groomed Trails and Where to Stay, from Mount Shasta to Kings Canyon
Average Reviews:

I have high respect for the author and I find the front matter on skiing history and ski techniques very interesting & informative.
However, for a guidebook, I was disappointed to find NO maps of ski trails for anywhere. No ski tours are described. Instead each ski area is described in general terms. The description of developed ski facilities and lodging is good, but where's the ski trails?
Furthermore, the coverage is spotty. All the areas around Tahoe and Donner are covered, but the southern and eastern Sierra and southern California ski areas are poorly represented.
I recommend buying Marcus Libkind's "Ski Tours in the Sierra Nevada." He has 4 volumes for various parts of the Sierra and another book on Lassen.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional reviewer hired by the publisher, but a real skier.

When author Michael Jeneid moved west to start the Sierra Club's Cross-Country Ski School at the Clair Tappaan Lodge he discovered that California is one of the premier ski areas in the country. Now, after years of investigation and research, he has compiled a book detailing California's major cross-country ski areas and local resort, hotel and lodge accommodations. This combination how-to and trail guidebook covers virtually all of California's groomed cross-country ski areas. The trails were selected for their variety and the accommodations that surround them. Photos demonstrate turn techniques and show the beauty of the 22 areas covered.Author Michael Jeneid is a fully certified P.S.I.A. cross-country instructor. This book is fun to read and has many great ideas about what to do in Palm Springs and the surrounding towns. I particularly like the separate highlighted areas that point out things that the author feels you really shouldn't miss on your trip. The book covers activities, food and lodging. Although it doesn't say specifically how much things cost, it does give a general price range, as in "moderate to ultra deluxe". I think this book will help any visitor to the Palm Springs area find and see things they might otherwise miss.

Ulysses Press's Hidden Guides are where vacations meet adventures. First, each book in the Hidden series reviews a destination's famed attractions. Then - and more importantly - it invites the reader to go further by exploring "hidden" spots that other guides overlook, including small inns and recommended restaurants. The guides feature places local residents enjoy, including beaches, parks, and non-touristy neighbourhoods and contain the author's favourite picks, three-day getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, website and email addresses, maps that "zoom in" on each area, and plenty of photos and illustrations.

The Everything Family Guide to Northern California and Lake Tahoe: A complete guide to San Francisco, Yosemite, Monterey, and Lake Tahoeand all the beautiful spots in between (Everything Series)

This travel guide is an extremely general guide to the sights of Northern California and Lake Tahoe. I bought it because we will be going to Lake Tahoe for a week and this guide has barely 20 pages covering the entire Lake Tahoe and Reno region. I could name more attractions off the top of my head than is covered by this book.
There are only a couple attractions listed for each city with very brief descriptions. I don't know why the writer chose the ones that were listed because I could think of many better places to go in some of the cities that I have been to. It doesn't really give me confidence in the rest of the book.
The editing of this book is very sloppy. Six pages of the Lake Tahoe section were mistakenly swapped with the Gold Country section. I wonder what else is wrong if they were unable to catch such an obvious mistake.
As for the family aspect of this, many of the restaurants listed in this guide that I am familiar with are not even that family-friendly. They tend to be on the fancy high-end side, restaurants that I wouldn't even take my well-behaved kids to dine. Just glancing at other restaurants in areas unfamiliar to me, I notice many wine bars and resort restaurants, not exactly family vacations destinations.
I guess if you have no idea what is in Northern California, this book might be helpful, but you would be much better off with the free guide that your local AAA gives out.

AAA and Mobil Travel guides are just OK -- they list a million things to see and places to go, but they don't do a very good job steering you toward the best stuff or planning how to spend each day of your vacation. This can be important, when you're visiting a place you've never been before and may never get to see again. These Travel Smart books contain a much shorter list, point you just toward the good stuff, and help you figure out how to spend each day. Right down to "eat breakfast here, then go there". The Unofficial Guide to Skiing in the West Review

The Unofficial Guide to Skiing in the West
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a really thorough book on just about everyplace out west in terms of ski mountain descriptions -- runs and the like. Whoever was in charge of editing the book's illustrations must not have seen the text, because although the illustrations show runs and lifts, only the lifts are labeled -- but the text usually mentions several runs in the context of a single lift, rendering the descriptions confusing and the maps somewhat useless. The descriptions of the ski areas themselves seem to be a little skimpy
The beginning of the book describes some of the "how-to" stuff in terms of getting good deals and the like, but doesn't go into enough detail about these kinds of things, specifically in reference to particular areas. Surely they must be familiar enough with major destination areas to suggest specifics.
Overall, it's a good read, especially for those unfamiliar with out-west ski options.

America's National Parks for Dummies, Second Edition Review

America's National Parks for Dummies, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a great guide for visiting the most popular national parks in the United States. It provides extensive information on parks such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion. Repanshek details the pros and cons of each park with candor with helpful comments about what to expect from the weather, wildlife and crowds.
Each chapter focuses on a different park. Within each chapter, he covers such topics as: geology, attractions, directions, fees, safety precautions, hikes, ranger programs, lodging, dining options, and other essentials such as post offices, lost and founds, etc. He writes in the first person, and often makes amusing commentaries about his own experiences and expectations. He does a thorough job covering each park - one can sense from reading that not only has he personally visited these places, but that he has returned to each a number of times and writes with the experience that is so valuable to those on a limited time schedule. He acknowledges that while each park could be a vacation of its own, many people can only spend a day or two at each place. To accomodate such travelers, he includes a section in each chapter on what to do if you only have one day to explore the park. This can be an incredibly useful tool if you are on a tight time schedule.
Frequently in travel guides, one gets the sense that the author is either an avid outdoorsman bent on roughing it, or a once-a-year vacationer who would rather die than sleep in a tent. Not so here - Repanshek clearly addresses both groups. He details all the available campsites in a park, along with his opinions on how clean/quiet/developed each site is; but also lists hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, ranging from the cheapest to the swankiest of lodgings. Same goes for the dining options. I personally appreciated this a great deal - my trip was primarily a camping excursion, but every once in a while we decided to splurge on decent hotels and were grateful for his frankness in describing what we could expect for our money.
My only gripe with this book is that it only covers 15 parks. Of course, due to its level of detail, it would be difficult to cover more. My hope is that Kurt Repanshek considers putting together two or more separate guides, for the Eastern and Western National Parks. He has a great eye for detail and leaves no stones unturned in his comprehensive tour of the American parks. I highly recommend this guide!

i am planning a trip concentrating on coastal areas near l a. so after using amazon's "search the book" feature, i saw this book covered many of the areas i was looking at. while waiting for it to arrive i've been doing a fair amount of research on the web. now that the book is here, i am amazed to find the content is almost completely taken from local chamber of commerce's web pages. the sections in this book are less detailed summaries of what information you would get off of local commerce and tourism sites. so much so that many phrases used would result in a plagiarism lawsuit had they not changed one of the words in the paragraph. after reading this book i seriously doubt ellen clark or ray riegert have ever even been to the l a area. i strongly advise you don't make the same mistake i did. look for a different book, or do as the authors did and simply use the internet. for the only way the information in this book would be considered "hidden" is if you have no internet acces. if that's the case, then this review won't save you any money.
