Some of the maps are lacking in detail, but this is the standard, and I think everyone paddling canoes and kayaks in Minnesota owns a copy. It's also the "official" book with the approval of the DNR (Department of Natural Resources). I'd love for better, and larger, maps, but this book is most of what you need.

It should be titled "Things other books talk about when describing Maui". There was not much that I found new in this book that I have not read in other Maui tour books. It had some decent descriptions and pictures, but not much more then that. I was looking for some real "hidden" places and finds, but was really disappointed.

Hidden San Diego: Including La Jolla, the Zoo, San Diego County Beaches, and Tijuana (Hidden Travel)
Average Reviews:

I'm planning a trip to San Diego and I needed some ideas about what to actually do while I'm there. I already knew that I'd want to go to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. I also knew that I wanted to spend some time at the beach and find a good historical park or museum. Apart from that, I was completely lost.
Hidden San Diego came to my rescue. I immediately opened this book to the section of the city where I'll be staying. I quickly came to realize that I could easily spend my entire vacation without leaving that community. There were plenty of things to do and see. After I felt confident that I could find my way around in that little section, I quickly expanded my searches to areas further away.
Still, probably my favorite portion of this book was the sections on dining. It's hard to find a good place to eat in an unfamiliar city. Then, if you are lucky enough to serendipitously find a good restaurant, you tend to stick to that one place and have to endure one type of cuisine for the entire trip. The restaurant advice in Hidden San Diego is like having a good friend who knows all of the best places to eat. No matter what your budget, what kind of atmosphere you'd prefer, or what type of fare you are feeling like this book has enough choices that you never have to eat at the same place twice.

Hidden San Diego provides a broad selection of lodging and dining options from funky surfer hotels on the beach and homey cafes to movie star-getaway resorts and gourmet sushi bars. This is the second book I've read by Matt. The first one on Yosemite was equally good. This book was especially interesting to me since my husband and I recently visited Yellowstone. We didn't spend a long time there but could re-live some of the places we had seen. Matt does an excellant job of giving information on where to stay, where to eat, and what hikes to take. It's clear from his writtings that he truly loves the National Parks. It's written from a personal point of view which makes it all the more enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park. It's a great read.

Awesome guide for planning a day or weekend bike centric trip. We based on a weekend away along the new 13 mile Gitchi Gami bike trail based on this book (Splitrock, Gooseberry falls etc.) We also spent the day riding from Hopkins, to Excelsior and on to Victoria on the light rail trail because of this book. It provides some food and shopping options along the way. It has great maps and lets you know of the trail conditions and surface type. It really brings together a lot of hard to research extended bike trail info into one well researched book. I think the author Doug Shidell personally researched most trails and points of interest.

This guide scored an A+! Every place it suggested was great, and the information was always helpful. We had this book, Lets Go, Zagat San Fran (which didn't even have many of the recommended restaurants listed), and Fodors. This one was by far the best. By then end of our 2 week trip, we had stopped using all the other books. I ended up giving all but this one away. The only thing I would change is the maps. They were not very detailed. I would recommend getting this book and then a detailed San Fran and surrounding area map from a gas station when you get there.

Birding Utah Review

Birding Utah
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Birding Utah provides a comprehensive resource for finding birds in Utah. The extensive information provided should prove extremely useful for novice to expert birders, as well as any outdoor enthusiast.
The book includes 5 chapters and an extensive appendix of birding and travel information sources. It is scientifically accurate and well written in a casual style. Chapter One details the basics of planning a successful birding trip, which should be most useful to novice birders. The second chapter describes Utah's biological environment from a broad-scale description of topography and climate to a finer resolution of habitats. Reading this chapter should give you an intimate feeling of the biological organization and spatial qualities of the state. The majority of the book is devoted to chapter 3, a description of 112 potential birding sites grouped according to region. The sites range from potential day trips to longer overnight excursions. The amount of detail that is provided for each site makes this book much more than a birding guide, but a travel guide for nature around the state. Included for each site are a list of habitats, birds, best times to bird, suggestions on where birds may be seen, directions to the site, general area information, a map, potential hazards, nearest facilities, and camping locations. It is obvious that each site has been researched by the author. The fourth chapter is a listing of birds that occur within the state; and associated habitat type, the regional distribution, and seasonal occurrence within the state. In chapter 5, the author has selected 50 "sought after" birds and details where and when the birds are likely to be found, and the chances for viewing one of these species. This chapter is unique to this birding guide because it also includes fine-scaled distribution maps based on current habitat types.
My only criticism with the book is the manner in which it has been bound. For a field guide that is likely to get a significant amo! unt of use outdoors, I wonder if the binding will hold up very long. A more substantial binding would have been of great value.

Each description details habitat, specialty birds, best time of year and day to bird, birding strategies, and easy-to-follow directions. Paddling Michigan Review

Paddling Michigan
Average Reviews:

This book, Paddling Michigan, and Canoeing Michigan Rivers by Jerry Dennis and Craig Date were both purchased by our Scout Troop to aid in the planning and execution of our Scouting Outing Canoe trips. Both books are great, but the boys preferred the Canoeing Michigan Rivers over this book Paddling Michigan, although both books are being used by the Scouts.
This book has it all to plan an outing, the maps, river description, challenge, a "standard time factor" and excellent commentary on the expectation of the canoe trip. The Senior Patrol Leader Council, the event planning committee of Boy Scouts aged 14-17, was able to take this book and properly plan, organize and execute several canoe trips. It had all the information needed to make the proper decisions without having to go visit the river first, or rely on comments from someone who knows someone who said that access to the river was available from County Road 48.
The Scout Troop now uses this book as a first resourse for planning canoe trips in Michigan and has greatly aided the exploration of the rivers of Michigan with confidence!

If you're interested in hiking in Florida, this book's for you.
I've lived in Florida all my life save a two-year stretch in grad school in another state, and I've camped and hiked in different parts of Florida quite a bit. So when I say that I learned a lot from this book that really says something.
The book is full of good information and pointers, and most importantly it goes through a huge number of different places to hike and gives detailed information on what's there, how long the hike is, what kind of access is available, if any special permits are required, and generally anything noteworthy about each place. As I read I jotted down a bunch of notes, so now have a long list of new places to hike all around North Florida.

Hampton Court: A Social and Architectural History Review

Hampton Court: A Social and Architectural History
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit a weakness for coffee-table books about palaces, stately homes etc, but this sumptuous, oversize volume is among the better ones of the genre. It is a detailed history of Hampton Court Palace - its origins, construction, additions, renovations, decoration and gardens, but also it touches on the lives and motivations of its people - builders and architects, kings and princes, bureaucrats and functionaries, tenants and visitors.
Richly illustrated with floor plans, drawings, paintings, prints, portraits, and photographs, this account of Hampton Court brings the story of the famous palace up to the 21st century.
When I last visited Hampton Court a quarter century ago, both house and gardens were looking decidedly shabby and, apparently, it got much worse before it got better. Tourists were passing it up in droves. Scandalous mismanagement, including a 3 million pound contractor fraud, dismantled fire detectors and gateways too narrow for fire engines, led up to a disastrous fire in 1986 and resulted in 2 deaths.
Although this is a serious work, one (unintentionally?) hilarious episode described in the book is the comic-opera visit to view the fire damage by the then Secretary of State for the Environment (& the man ultimately responsible for Hampton Court), Nicolas Ridley. Ridley, a chain smoker, his wife who was claustrophobic and ten other dignitaries were descending in the lift when it jammed between floors; the emergency manual door-opening device failed to function; the elevator maintenance man could not be located. Two hours later the Fire Brigade forced the doors open with a hydraulic jack. Heads rolled afterward - if only metaphorically.
New schemes have since been put in place for restoration and refurbishment, for improved property management and to enhance the attractions of the historic old palace for new generations of visitors.

Hampton Court-probably Britain's most important secular historicbuilding complex-was a center of court life and politics from the latefifteenth to the middle of the eighteenth century. It was also a placeof architectural innovation and the site of the most ambitious formalgardens ever built in Britain. This book offers the first history inover a century of Hampton Court, its gardens, and its parks. Lavishlyillustrated, the book brings to life the entire history of thebuilding, including the terrible fire of 1986 and thetwentieth-century opening of the complex to the public. Simon Thurley, the unrivalled authority on Hampton Court's architecture, interiordecoration, and history, sets the building in political and socialcontext. He explores the lives and motivations of its builders, telling the stories of the architects and others who fulfilled thewhims of kings and princes. In addition to throwing light on thecharacter of court life, the book makes important new attributions toarchitects Hugh May, Nicholas Hawksmoor, William Talman, ColenCampbell, Edward Blore, and others.

Yosemite and The Southern Sierra Nevada: A Complete Guide, Including Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes (Great Destinations)
Average Reviews:

David Page may have invented a new genre - the literary travel guide. His book starts with natural and cultural history - "Contexts" - the back-stories to the remarkable places he describes in graceful language.
Page has skied, climbed, walked or driven to all of these places and this shows in the how-to-get-there chapter called "Into the Hills".
Each area chapter, Death Valley, Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia Kings Canyon and Yosemite, has more context stories and exhaustive listing of places to eat and stay, and things to see and do. The book is crammed with details: you can get rattlesnake empanasas at the Furnace Creek Inn, the location of the only Indian restaurant between LA and Carson City in Nevada, where to check the white-water flows on the Kaweah River, the temperature of Keogh Hot Springs and much more.
Describing the highest, lowest, snowiest, driest, sunniest, and arguably some of the most beautiful places in the US, this book is a splendid resource for exploring a remarkable land. This is a book worth reading, even if you never get to visit these places. But I hope you do.

America's National Wildlife Refuges, 2nd Edition: A Complete Guide (America's National Wildlife Refuges: A Complete Guide)
Average Reviews:

Overall an excellent guide to our National Wildlife Refuges. Introductory chapters review the NWR history and key conservation issues. Then each of the refuges (over 500 of them) are described, state by state. The descriptions are generally quite thorough and interesting.
The biggest flaw with the book is a total lack of maps to show you where the refuges are located. If the section for each state just had a small map, the reader would instantly be able to visualize the refuge location. Also, the book is divided into "Featured refuges" and "Other refuges", with each section arranged by state. This sometimes makes finding a refuge confusing. It would be simpler if all the refuges for each state were grouped together, rather than in two different locations.
All in all a very good guide; I just wish there were some maps.
