Average Reviews:

The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, 2000, is the only book you'll want to read when planning your trip. It goes into great detail about all the hotels and casinos, what their rooms are like, what the hotels offer, what the casinos offer, and lots more. It tells you how to obtain "comps" and how to play the games, with easy to understand rules and diagrams. With their 100+ pages of Dining and Restaurant information, you know where to find the best food and the best prices. The Hotel Information Chart in the back is extremely helpful because you can compare hotels without having to flip through a lot of pages. Chapter 5 talks about shopping and the sights around Nevada, in case you plan on doing more than gambling. The Unofficial Guide gives you the pros and cons of each show so you can decide wether or not it's worth 100.00 a person, to see Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage. There is also a little section that tells you where you have the best odds of winning at each game, and at which casino. Another great thing about this book are the maps of The Strip and of Downtown. It lets you know how far you are from point "A" to point "B", because hotel properties are deceiving in their size. A walk from your room at the Venetian, to Caesars Palace may take 20 minutes or so. All 544 pages are packed full of helpful and accurate information. The Unofficial Guide made planning our trip extremely easy. I highly recommend this book, and only this book, to anyone planning on going to Las Vegas!

Average Reviews:

Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks good overall guide to the area. It's descriptions of the lodging choices and the dining descriptions were very good although it omitted the Geyser Grill in the Old Faithful area. The descriptions of activities in GT were very good, but the descriptions of activities in YNP were lacking. There were some omissions: the Antelope Creek Drainage area and the Brink of the Upper/Lower Falls trails. Some felt the Norris Geyser Basin highly overrated as was the West Thumb Geyser Basin and Osprey Falls. This book is a great starting point but by no means should it be the only book you have. It's perfect for making your dining and lodging choices but suffers in adequately describing activities (for that check out 'An Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks' by Lisa Gollin Evans).

There are simply better ways to spend $99.95 than on a ring-bound 100 page list that is far out of date.
This is a list. It was published on Jan. 1, 2001. You can see lots of such lists for free using Internet searches.
Lots of things changed since 1/1/2001 in the certification world. If you want to know anything about any particular certification, other than it's name and sponsoring organization, you'd need more than a list anyway.

From historic wineries in California's Sonoma and Napa Counties to back roads, lodging in small retreats, and dining in recommended establishments, Hidden Wine Country seeks to uncover less-traveled roads in the Wine Country - and does it successfully. Hidden Wine Country is quite an achievement for an area over-saturated with publicity: the authors specialize in finding the unusual, quality experience. Hidden Wine Country is a highly recommended "take-along" guide.

Written for those who want to delve beyond the big-name wineries and roadside offerings, this book uncovers the region's true connoisseur culture. Exploring the region by car, horseback, balloon ride, train, or river cruise are all described, and details on over 59 wineries in six different regions are included. 77 country inns, spas, resorts, and ranches are reviewed along with recommendations on dozens of top restaurants featuring California, French, and Italian cuisine. Proving that there's much more to the Wine Country than its sweet nectar, Hidden Wine Country also covers parks, bed and breakfasts, hot spring spas, biking adventures, and historic spots.

I bought this book based on the publishers blurb in Amazon.
This is an unfortunate demonstration of the major pitfall of buying books from Amazon. If I had looked at the book in a bookstore I would never have purchased it, I sincerely doubt anyone would. The book is poorly executed primarily in its index or rather series of indexes which are set out so to make as little practical sense as possible.
I will never be able to tell you what is in the book because it cannot be found. It is a frustrating exercise simply leafing through it because the index is no help. Perhaps if I was intimately acquainted with New England I may have some idea where to look in the book so as I could find what I was after. If I did, why would I be buying a travel guide?
I will stick to the DK's Eyewitness Travel guides from now on at least I can find stuff in it.

Travel Smart: Iowa/Nebraska Review

Travel Smart: Iowa/Nebraska
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I never thought a travel book could be so literate and engaging. It's almost as if the author grew up on the border of Iowa and Nebraska, possibly on the Iowa side. He paints a festive atmosphere about all the visited locales, and he does it with such interest that you can actually SEE the diamond so big it's gonna make you puke at the Iowa State Fair, TASTE the cup-o-pizza they sell at the Grotto of the Redemption, HEAR the townsfolk of Kearney, Nebraska singing "Picking Out a Thermos for You" in the Bandshell on Sunday nights after church, SMELL the perfumed dancers on the private disco floors of Scottsbluff, FEEL the ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair at the Iowa Great Lakes.
There was a special on VH1 where a former roommate of Munson was telling a story about living in their apartment, Munson's first. "I just really remember after I'd lived there a while, the guy from U.S. West came with the phone books. Kyle picks it up and starts, like, freaking out about it. He's all, 'The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity I need! My name in print! That really makes somebody! Things are going to start happening to me now.' And I was all, 'Chill dude.'"

Hidden Belize 2 Ed: Including Tikal, Copan and the Cayes

We had a fabulous time on the French Polynesian islands with "Hidden Tahiti". That book took us to out-of-the-way natural beauties, great local-style restaurants and shops, etc. So, when we were set to travel to Belize, we expected more of the same.
Hidden Belize was NOT the same. We found nothing hidden in the book that wasn't over-publicized by local tour agencies, hotels, etc. The great little local-cuisine restaurants of the Tahiti book instead was replaced with all the expensive restaurants catering to wealthy US citizens wanting gourmet dinners. We found great local establishments featuring great local cuisine and culture all on our own. We actually used the recommendations of this book as places to stay away from.
The one redeeming feature of this book was a good overview of the geography of the different areas of the country.
So, as I said, my wife and I like to experience a lot of local flavor on our trips, and this book showed us none of that.

I checked out several tour books before we left for our southern California vacation, but chose the Ray Riegert book for it's unique suggestions for food, lodging, and tourist site recommendations. The book is well organized. We followed the chapters from San Diego through the beach towns all the way to Los Angeles. We were delighted with all of the "hidden" restaurants that we tried. It helped that all of the information was current too. Riegert's suggestions for interesting routes and parks led us through some of the most beautiful country imaginable - places we would never have seen if it were not for this book. Hidden Southern California is a great resource that we will use again and again.

This book is great. I know the author and had an opportunity to do some editing on it prior to publication. I am joining the author in China mid-March for our second trip to do some light hiking and touristing. I have found the book very useful, especially the detail she gives regarding both preparations and the actual journey itself.

This is the first guidebook specifically written for people who speak no Chinese but would like to go hiking on their own in China off the beaten track. The hikes are through the beautiful Qinling and Daba Mountains in Sichuan and Shaanxi Province along the few remaining stretches of one of China's old imperial roads known as the Road to Shu. There are nineteen hikes, most in the six-hour range, but some two-and three-day hikes as well. There are maps, hotel and restaurant listings, specific information on bus and train travel, and Chinese phrases to help you secure lodgings on your own. There are five handy pages of local menu selections in Chinese, as well.
Also included is some unusual information you won't find in any other guidebook: Is it safe to drink Bad Weather Beer or eat in a restaurant that advertises "Englishmen delicious"? When staying in a Chinese farmhouse should you wash your face and feet in the same basin? The most important question though is: How cheaply can you do this trip? The answer is for as little as $25 a day in cheap lodgings or for $80 a day in costlier ones.

Hospitality 2010: The Future of Hospitality and Travel Review

Hospitality 2010: The Future of Hospitality and Travel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many different kinds of books about future trends. Some talk about the future as some radical break from the present. These usually become dated quickly as the future ends up being a lot more like the present than the prediction. Think about the 1960s predictions of flying cars or world wide collapse by the 1980s. We are still driving internal combustion cars on highways and while there are terrible tragedies such as Rwanda, Ethiopia, and the Sudan, most people in the world are living better lives than their ancestors.
Other books on predictions look carefully at the present and what trends seem to be emerging. They then look at what factors might prefer one trend over the other and then make their predictions. Their predictions tend to be more near term than the books on vast and radical change. This book is of this kind.
The book consists of nine easy to read and informative chapters in two parts and five very helpful appendices as well as an index. The first part sets up the context for hospitality and is called "Common Concerns for the Hospitality Industry". The second part goes through the industry sector by sector and is sensibly called "Sector Forecasts".
The first chapter sets the stage by looking at the present situation in the world (the book looks at the global trends in hospitality). The reader gets a number of lists of countries on various trends in political stability, internal population, environment, education, crime, and more. The second chapter explains why these factors look positive for the future take off in hospitality. The authors see a coming strong world wide economic recovery with hospitality being one of the fastest growing sectors. They also see the growing use of Internet as a support for the growth of travel rather than people staying at home and communicating over the web instead. They believe the greater opportunities for global commerce through the Web will require more skilled workers who will have to be outsourced around the globe and will require travel to support more global operations.
Chapter three provides the reader with trends in security and business considerations in the age of terror. Security issues for persons and data will continue to grow. Most of their information is sound and practical. However, they saw oil staying stable at $25-$28 per barrel and prices above that as unsustainable. Oops.
Chapter four begins the sector forecasts. Chapter four talks about the expansion of tourism and chapter five is about business travel - MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions. Chapter six discusses the huge growth in the cruise industry while chapter seven discusses the troubled times ahead for the airlines. Chapter eight is of most interest to me because my company sells pre-screening assessment services in the hospitality industry and primarily to restaurants (yes, email me!). The news is pretty good for restaurants if you are going big or staying small. They see the mid-sized chains getting squeezed out. We shall see. The last chapter takes a brief look at decades to come.
Appendix A is an excellent look at 52 trends shaping the future. This deserves close reading and some time thinking about what they authors have to offer here. Appendix B provides some criteria you can use to evaluate national stability in any market you are thinking of. Appendix C lists Hospitality Associations and Publications with contact info - very valuable. And Appendix D lists college programs in hospitality with websites. Also useful.
These books never get the future right. They aren't really supposed to. What they are for is to help you see the present a little more clearly and maybe a present wave you can hop on to ride for awhile and to avoid getting swamped by another wave you didn't see.

The Southern Costa Rica Handbook Review

The Southern Costa Rica Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prior to departure, I sat on the floor of my local bookstore sifting through no less than 17 books on Costa Rica. An hour and a half-- and one headache-- later, I finally narrowed my choices down to what I like to call "the big four"--those familiar-named guidebooks that everyone would be carrying. It was not until I was already traveling in Costa Rica that I discovered Alexander del Sol's Southern Costa Rica Handbook and realized that I had finally arrived.
After two dizzying weeks of trying to decipher the nondescript differences between various hotels, restaurants and tourist traps as reviewed by the big four, what a joy it was to finally read about a destination in such detail and clarity that you could actually picture where it was you were headed. Mr. del Sol has done a terrific job of culling out the junk for you, and then describing his choices in such a manner that you can joyfully plan your trip with confidence.
As one of his previous reviewers commented, I only wish he would write a guide book for the rest of Costa Rica--and the world, for that matter!
