Versailles: A Biography of a Palace Review

Versailles: A Biography of a Palace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Versailles: A Biography of a Palace by Tony Spawforth is an architectural history quite different from most of the dull, dry ones. This book is filled with true stories of incidents within Versailles told by its inhabitants, from servants to kings and queens. The history of place is derived not only from facts and descriptions but also from writings of people who actually lived there or helped work on the palace and gardens. This is really interesting, sort of like eves-dropping on a wicked plot or an unlawful tryst, or the collapse of a kingdom, for which the palace itself plays a huge part as the culprit. The book is fun to read, captivating, and will fill your mind with images of an unbelievably decadent and lavish lifestyle, long-gone forever. You'll find this an interesting read.

Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England Review

Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a great fan of Amanda Vickery's books. And I think that they should be required reading for anyone interested in the social history of the Georgian era.
Her previous work, "The Gentleman's Daughter" was a wonderfully detailed exploration of the intimate lives of women in the 18th century and helped many of us to a greater understanding of Jane Austen's female character's lives, setting them in a recognisable historical context .Her new book "Behind Closed Doors : at home in Georgian England" once again takes the domestic realm as it subject but details it on a much wider scale.
She does not concentrate on one class of people but considers, in minute detail, the intimate lives of landladies and lodgers, tradesmen and women, professionals and aristocrats living in both London and in the provinces.
Its scale is breathtaking and the detail, delicious. And what I really adore is that she admits the historical truth of Jane Austen's writings by including copious quotes from the six novels to illustrate her points. Indeed, she devotes almost half a chapter of the book to consider the way in which the subject of the home is treated by Austen's heroines and heroes, even going so far as to paraphrase the famous opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice.
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Georgian house with a drawing room, French windows and lawns must be in want of a mistress..."
It was an irresistible and understandable opportunity ....I daresay had I been given the chance to play with that famous line, I would not have let it pass either...
While reading Professor Vickery's descriptions of the lives and experiences of real individuals the Jane Austen devotee will find many parallels with the situations in which her characters find themselves.
The book is beautifully produced , printed on fine glossy paper and illustrated in black and white and colour with very appropriate and carefully chosen illustrations.
I confess I have devoured this book and read it quickly almost at one sittting.I am going to revisit it over the next few weeks savouring its detail. I highly recommend this book to you: anyone who is keen on Jane Austen's works will enjoy delving into the minutiae of real people's lives - especially as many of the lives have telling details which echo in Austen's works.
Is it too much to hope that this book will soon appear in a Kindle edition?

In this brilliant new work, Amanda Vickery unlocks the homes of Georgian England to examine the lives of the people who lived there. Writing with her customary wit and verve, she introduces us to men and women from all walks of life: gentlewoman Anne Dormer in her stately Oxfordshire mansion, bachelor clerk and future novelist Anthony Trollope in his dreary London lodgings, genteel spinsters keeping up appearances in two rooms with yellow wallpaper, servants with only a locking box to call their own. Vickery makes ingenious use of upholsterer’s ledgers, burglary trials, and other unusual sources to reveal the roles of house and home in economic survival, social success, and political representation during the long eighteenth century. Through the spread of formal visiting, the proliferation of affordable ornamental furnishings, the commercial celebration of feminine artistry at home, and the currency of the language of taste, even modest homes turned into arenas of social campaign and exhibition.

Ski Magazine's Guide to New England and Quebec Review

Ski Magazine's Guide to New England and Quebec
Average Reviews:

Nevermind any previous reviews, with McCarthy at the helm of this installation of the east's must-have ski guide , there may never need to be another. Thorough, insightful, and downright truthful, it's essential for even veteran eastern skiers to get the real deal on their favorite small and mega resorts. I've put it in my bib's map pocket (my only complaint is that it's a bulky pocket fit) and am waiting for the winter storm clouds.

Despite the rise of western mega-resorts, skiing in greater New England hasn't lost its appeal among the thousands of skiers who live on the eastern seaboard and make weekend treks up north throughout the long ski season. The draw is quintessential New England skiing and ambiance: the challenge of narrow trails, the variability of natural snow mixed with the reliability of machine-made snow, wooded slopes, and the clapboard architecture of the old world combined with new resort conveniences. This guide offers photographs, maps, and fact-filled descriptions of the mountains and trails from the experts at SKI Magazine as well as insider scoops on secret spots, the best hotels, and the finest restaurants available at each skiing mecca. 87 ski resorts are covered, including Killington, Sugarloaf, and Stowe.

Frommer's Yosemite & Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks Review

Frommer's Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guide is very succinct, affordable, and accessible. It's not at all comprehensive, yet is still one of the most useful guides to the region due to its brevity and organziation. Plus it covers both Sequoia/Kings Canyon and Yosemite.
Planning: A nice job is done. There is a lot of detail on roads into the parks and hotels, information lacking in the more specialized hiking guides. It covers most of the big park highlights you don't want to miss if you're only visiting the region once or twice. This is not the sort of guide that will tell you where to find solitude and remote regions. It is also one of the best guides to have if you don't want to rough it the entire trip. I like to space long backpacking treks with a visit to a nice restaurant-this guide offers a lot of variety on this end. The same goes for hotels, if you're not into backpacking or looking for a place just after getting on/off a plane.
Hiking Trip Descriptions: Pretty minimal. This book spotlights the more popular trails but does a fairly decent job of highlighting don't miss items.
Maps: Non-topographic but highly readable. The printing is crisp and highly readable. Useful for planning short day trips.
Overall this is a pretty useful guide. As the price is great you can easily buy this to supplement a more specialized hiking guide and map. Note that Frommer seems to put out a new edition every couple of years. I don't think very much could have changed, so an older edition will do just fine.

Moon Yellowstone and Grand Teton: Including Jackson Hole (Moon Handbooks) Review

Moon Yellowstone and Grand Teton: Including Jackson Hole (Moon Handbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're planning an extended visit to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, I highly recommend this guidebook. (If you're only going to visit the Parks for three or four days as part of a longer trip, however, it's probably more detail than you would need.) We recently visited the two Parks for a total of twelve days, and I found this Guide extremely helpful. Unusually for a guidebook, I actually read it pretty much straight through before we left. It's an enjoyable read, even aside from the quality of the information it presents.
The Moon Guidebooks only seem to have emerged onto the scene within the past several years, and for many readers they are still likely to be less familiar than such old standbys as Fodor's or even Lonely Planet. But I've used several guides from this publisher now and have found them to be uniformly excellent.
In terms of the book's coverage, you get 70 pages on Yellowstone Park itself; 64 pages on the Yellowstone Gateway communities; 33 on Grand Tetons National Park; and 91 on the Jackson Hole area. There's also a 33-page "Background" section that provides interesting information about the geography and climate, flora and fauna, and the often controversy-ridden history of both Parks, and a 4-page section on avoiding or dealing with bear attacks. Finally, there's a solid 6-page bibliography with suggestions for other reading.
The book includes an abundance of maps - in the sections focused on sightseeing (as opposed to where to stay and eat), you'll typically find at least one map every four pages. There are interesting, even compelling sidebars, such as the one about "Beaver Dick" Leigh, an English immigrant and early resident of Jackson Hole who on Christmas Day 1887 watched his wife Jenny, newborn baby, and four other children all die of smallpox and left a heartbreaking account of the experience, which the author quotes in full (p. 113).
This guidebook is thorough, accurate, and useful, but beyond that, I enjoyed the glimpses of the author's personality that he lets come through in his writing. "The Buffalo Bill Museum is a real joy," he tells you, although his assessment of the Cody Firearms Museum is more restrained: "it's interesting even for those of us who consider the proliferation of guns a national menace. . . . All told, this museum houses more implements of destruction and mayhem than you're likely to see at an NRA convention." Or: "For those who love history, Trail Town is an incredible treasure trove without the fancy gift shops and commercial junk that tag along with most such endeavors. This is the real thing, low-key and genuine."
He also writes effective descriptions that will help you decide what you may want to see:
"Togwotee Pass is one of the most scenic drives imaginable, with Ramshorn Peak peeking down from the north for several miles until the road plunges into dense lodgepole forests (Shoshone National Forest) with lingering glimpses of the Pinnacle Buttes. At the crest it emerges into the grass-, willow-, and flower-bedecked meadows with Blackrock Creek winding through. Whitebark pine and Englemann spruce trees cover the nearby slopes. . . . Togwotee Pass is a complete shock after all the miles of sagebrush and grassland that control the heartland of Wyoming. It's like entering another world - one of cool, forested mountains and lofty peaks instead of the arid land with horizonwide vistas."
In short, this is an excellent guidebook to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and the immediately adjacent areas. If you're planning a more extensive ramble around other parts of Wyoming, then you'll want to check out the author's Wyoming volume for Moon, which tops out at a comprehensive 728 pages. (The Yellowstone-Grand Tetons coverage in the statewide volume runs about 180 pages, about half as long as in this separate volume specifically focusing on the Parks.)

Ok I know that this sounds bad. But this book is really detailed. Which is good. The bad part is most of the detail is information repeated over and over. If they would just say what they need to say one time the book would not be so expensive and thick. I know that they could get rid of at least 100 pages because of all the repeated items in the book.

This manual may not suit the requirements of the most ardent of backpackers and thrill seekers, but for an average Joe Camper like myself, it really came in handy through Washington State, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and on up into Banff and Jasper. A most resourceful guide that lists National Park Service information, directions to the Parks, campsites, hiking trails, info on backwoods camping...even tells you where you can shower after the fourth day! My only criticism is that my copy is as beat up as my hiking boots. A great resource to have, whether you're only there for a day, a drive-in camper, day hiker, or backpacker. I highly recommend it. Return to a time when life was simpler. Discover classic river towns, mountain retreats and coastal fishing villages, small towns where you can still shop on Main Street, where the hardware store and the bookstore are not part of a national chain, old buildings are restored and historic places are preserved. The Burnhams, also co-authors of The Virginia Handbook, have discovered and explored scores of these delightful towns. Destinations include Onancock, on Virginia's Eastern Shore; Irvington, a hip town built around The Tides resort; Strasburg and Front Royal, towns rich in Shenandoah Valley history; as well as coastal towns such as St. Michael's, Crisfield and St. Mary's. The places featured in this book have charming inns and B&Bs, in addition to good, locally owned restaurants. There are enough attractions to satisfy any traveler, but there is also space and time to tarry, to sit in a park or on a shaded bench and watch life pass by.

Ok, I got this book as well as the ultimate guide to Asheville and Western NC today in the mail.
First impressions for both of these books was to trow them in the trash.
(I am venting my anger here a due to my disappointment and frustration)
Why cant someone just write a travel guide without all the fluff?!
For your average Joe who is looking for a go here, see that, these are probably not for you.
If this book was condensed down to 50 pages I would have preferred that greatly.
If a future travel writer reads this PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, keep it simple! stop thinking your gonna be the next best seller for Christ sake!

I have a trip to plan, and don't need to spend a month reading a bunch of BS.

Henry Mayhew, founder of Punch magazine, wrote this four-volume sociological classic during the 1850's. If you are at all interested in the Victorian era, in British history, in London, or in urban history in general, this is a must-read. The Penguin version is abridged and is a distillation of the "best" of the multiple-volume set. This distillation is itself over 500 pages, so imagine the impact of the entire set! The utter destitution of the London poor is set out in such vivid detail than one cannot help being shocked at the conditions human beings were forced to live in in the greatest city of its time. The only fault I find with this book is Mayhew's occasional lapses into preaching. Otherwise a fine book

Unflinching reports of London's poor from a prolific and influential English writerLondon Labour and the London Poor originated in a series of articles, later published in four volumes, written for the Morning Chronicle in 1849 and 1850 when journalist Henry Mayhew was at the height of his career. Mayhew aimed simply to report the realities of the poor from a compassionate and practical outlook. This penetrating selection shows how well he succeeded: the underprivileged of London become extraordinarily and often shockingly alive.
