The Unofficial Guide to California with Kids (Unofficial Guides)
Average Reviews:

This book has been sooo helpful in planning our first family trip together up the coast! I was absolutely amazed. It gives you ideas for activities that are popular along with the hidden secrets of each area that are usually only known by the locals. Every section includes kid-friendly restaurants and hotels. There is an entire section on the best beaches and parks for children as well. One of the best parts is that at the beginning of each activity description, it gives you a 4-star scale on how each age range (up to seniors) will enjoy the activity. It also gives you ALL the important information on that activity such as how much it costs, whether or not food is available, stroller/wheelchair/locker rentals, how much time you can anticipate spending there and MANY other helpful tips and information.
I also bought the Fodor's California guide, but this has been SO much more informative and helpful for a family with children. Again - a MUST if you are planning a trip with you entire family.

Golf in Scotland: A Travel-Planning Guide with Profiles of 68 Great Courses Review

Golf in Scotland: A Travel-Planning Guide with Profiles of 68 Great Courses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Simply put, if you're an American (on anyone else who can read English) and you want to travel abroad to play golf in Scotland, this book is "a must," the first one you should buy, and maybe the only one you really need. That is, unless you don't care about what the trip will cost and you have no difficulty letting other people make decisions for you. Mr. Ferguson gives you the ins and outs of making your own arrangements, the pros and cons of various approaches, and the highlights of a number of top-notch Scottish golf courses. He gives you the tools to do it on your own, without the tour company or travel agent . . . to create your own golfing adventure. Which is not to say that Mr. Ferguson will not work with you as non-comissioned, fee-based agent (as he's done with me), but it's also very clear he'd be just as happy, maybe more so, to have you buy the book and plan the adventure on your own (as I do now). By the way, the second book you ought to buy is James Finegan's "Where Golf is Great" (see my Amazon review), a judgment with which I feel certain Mr. Ferguson would not disagree.

Thoroughly revised for travel in 2009-10, Golf in Scotland is designed to help travelers save money by planning their own trips to Scotland, the "Home of Golf." Seven chapters offer advice on when to go, where to go, lodging, tee times, and other travel decisions. St. Andrews receives special attention in its own chapter. Extensive descriptions of sixty-eight courses and their settings feature complete contact and booking information. A bonus section detailing five new Scottish courses is featured in this revised edition. Appendices include a "Golf-Readiness Checklist," a compendium of useful websites, and an annotated bibliography for further reading. The book is fully indexed. Golf in Scotland has been published in various editions since 2001 and is considered by many, "the bible of Scottish Travel."

Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

I read these reviews before buying this guide. They were all glowing except Mr. Walker saying that he wanted more information on what to see. Then I read dozens more great reviews on the first EZ guide.
I figured, it's a good chance this guy was confused. And after getting the guide, I could tell he was. He must not have read what it is. It is to make it easy for you to find the difficult to find old route not to give you places to stay or eat, supermarkets, locations of gas stations or anything else. Yes it does include some high points but give us a break! Walker should have bought the Dining & Lodging Guide and Adventure Handbook.

Open House Review

Elizabeth Berg has done it again---told the story of Everywoman, or at the least, a story every woman can identify with. This moving book, about the disintegration of a marriage and its aftermath, will touch all who read it.
Sam deals with the end of her marriage in a scattershot way: looking for reasons, spending lots of money, trying to figure out what to do, and generally flailing about, emotionally. But the reader comes to understand why, thanks to Berg's wonderful writing. This was the reaction of a woman has no idea what will happen next, when all the things she has thought would come to pass suddenly are no longer a part of her future.
The reader observes Sam as she takes in boarders to help pay the mortgage, has a succession of temp jobs, and begins dating again. At the same time, Sam is going through the grief process, trying to heal herself emotionally in order to get herself to a better place.
I found Berg's humor much more apparent in this book than in any of her others. I laughed out loud when Sam sat down at her sewing machine and sewed up the fly on every one of her husband's boxer shorts! Her characterizations -- of her son, her mother, and the boarders -- were excellent.
Had I not read any other Berg books, I probably would have given this a "5" but I don't think it was quite as good, nor as moving, as "Talk Before Sleep" or "Pull of the Moon".

Moon Yosemite (Moon Handbooks) Review

Moon Yosemite (Moon Handbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a lot of books about Yosemite but for an all encompassing guide to the park Ann Marie Brown's 'Moon Handbooks: Yosemite' is by far the best. Many guides list campgrounds in and around Yosemite. How many give you the best sites within each campground? How many note the free campgrounds at the nearby Nelder Grove of Sequoias and Fresno Dome? Many guides offer itineraries for a day, or two, or a week. But no other book offers itineraries for hardcore hikers, waterfall lovers, families with young children, and of course committed slackers. This book is truly unique, right down to a sidebar telling you where to find a good cappucino.
'Moon Yosemite' is divided into several sections. The initial chapters describe all the recreational opportunities in every area of the park. From bus tours of the valley floor and star gazing at Glacier Point (a new tour as of 2008), to horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and rock climbing, this guide lists all the available options for planning your vacation. Separate chapters describe dining and lodging options both within the park and from every major entrance. (The Yosemite Bug Hostel and Resort deservedly gets high marks in both of these chapters.) When combined with superb photos, nice full color maps, and some great chapters on natural and human history, this book should be your first choice when planning a visit to Yosemite.

She also breaks down outdoor recreation activities like hiking, backpacking, rafting, and fishing with the essentials: routes, total distance, and supplies. Whether it’s rock climbing near the Royal Arches, checking out Bridalveil Falls, or simply camping under the stars, Moon Yosemite gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.

Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (Park Guides) Review

Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (Park Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We just got back from our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!). This book was GREAT! Everything stated was right on the money, and we loved the compactness of it. It was easy to just throw in a backpack or carry-on. We also liked how the book was set up. It was easy to understand and to navigate. If you're looking for a good general overall book, this is the one for you.
Along with this book, we also purchased the Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park - it gave a really good and comprehensive explaination of the hikes found in each of the parks.
Recommendation: Don't be turned off by the idea of eating in a "cafeteria" within the park. We tried them twice while on vacation (both in Yellowstone) and were pleasantly surprised. The food was reasonable and quite good! The diningrooms were really nice as well - the one at Old Faithful overlooks the geyser!
If visiting the town of Jackson (which was a bit too riff-raffy for us), check out the Snake River Brewery. The food was reasonable and very good, the beer and service excellent and the best part - no line! Due to it being located "off the beaten track" a bit, though easily within walking distance from the town square, it doesn't get visited by a lot of tourists. If traveling with children (like us), try sitting upstairs. They have some old video games like Astoids and Pacman which allowed us to enjoy our meal and relax while the kids played the games.

Hotel Management and Operations Review

Hotel Management and Operations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My review is based on having used Dr. Rutherford's book the past consecutive 7 semesters (incl summer) at Hawaii Pacific University's Travel Industry Management program.
The compilation of articles is ideal for us because chapters are short, but comprehensive and interesting enough to retain student attention. 95% of my students are foreigners, and my average class size is 30 students from at least a dozen countries.
Chapters have numerous references, and all the chapters have challenging case studies except Finance.
This particular construction lends itself to a variety of delivery techniques, as stated in the Preface.
My wish list for the 3rd edition would include: an instructor's manual or workbook, a testbank of questions, e-book version, reducing the content on Marketing (almost double the amount of information in other chapters), and adding a section on Information Technology.
Students, educators, and hospitality professionals will enjoy a favorable ROI on this purchase.

Although the book lists several interesting and out of the way spots for the Keys, it was disappointing for the Everglades area. Shops, stops, sites around Homestead that were described glowingly were disappointing. I would prefer a book that describes "nothing" spots as exactly that. We went out of our way to places that were not worth going to.
Better for the Keys and Key West, very helpful there.

This book is, above all else, very catching. I saw it while I was browsing at my local bookstore and started to read the first page. The Physiology of New York Boarding-Houses Review

The Physiology of New York Boarding-Houses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thank goodness the NYT reviewed this; I snapped it up and have read it through twice, frequently laughing out loud and just as often gasping in shock. A human, funny, offensive, very lively and colorful tour of New York boarding houses, apartments, tenements in the mid-19th century (the author's adventures seem to have taken place in the 1840s and early '50s). I alternately fell in love with Gunn and wanted to sock him on the jaw. But you will never forget this book and will want to come back and dip into it often. The illustrations, too, are priceless. Bravo! to the publisher for reissuing this!

The American boardinghouse once provided basic domestic shelter and constituted a uniquely modern world view for the first true generation of U.S. city-dwellers. Thomas Butler Gunn's classic 1857 account of urban habitation, The Physiology of New York Boarding-Houses, explores the process by which boardinghouse life was translated into a lively urban vernacular. Intimate in its confessional tone, comprehensive in its detail, disarmingly penetrating despite (or perhaps because of) its self-deprecating wit, Physiology is at once an essential introduction to a "lost" world of boarding, even as it comprises an early, engaging, and sophisticated analysis of America's "urban turn" during the decades leading up to the Civil War.
In his introduction, David Faflik considers what made Gunn's book a compelling read in the past and how today it can elucidate our understanding of the formation and evolution of urban American life and letters.

I just bought a copy of this book last night after attending a reading with the authors and photographer, along with some of the men who are profiled in the book. This book is so touching and achingly beautiful. It reads like poetry. The words of the men themselves are printed alongside poignant photographs that seem to capture the sentiment of their words. I feel honored to have met some of these men in person and even more honored to have had the pleasure of asking them to autograph their individual pages. The title of my review here is what one of the men, Bruce, wrote to me last night.
To be able to put a voice and a human face to those who have likely seen the best and the worst of life is a gift to all thinking and compassionate people. This book proves that every person has a story to tell and if the words don't quite express it, the photos do.

Henry VIII: The King and His Court Review

Henry VIII: The King and His Court
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike some of the reviewers, I have been disappointed in some of Ms. Weir's books (especially those dealing with Richard III, where she skews the facts to fit her prejudice). But this one is a gem. WARNING: It is NOT a biography of Henry VIII (nor does it claim to be). It is a wonderful portrait of a court and an age. If the details of everyday life enchant you, you will love this book: you'll learn what Henry's court ate, drank, wore; how they ate, how they drank, and when they wore what! You'll get details about the various royal (and non-royal) residences that are very difficult to find elsewhere: how they were furnished, financed, run, used. And this time, Weir is scrupulous in citing her sources and in using them well. Where there are disputed facts, she indicates this. When she is hypothesizing, she indicates this as well. It is true that she appears to be quite fond of old Henry, but not as he became. Rather, I think, she admires the potential that was in the young king, the goodness, basic decency that could have made him England's best (if not greatest) king. The potential for selfishness, greed, paranoia, and self-delusion was also there--unfortunately, the bad side won! After reading Weir's book, I now share both Weir's semi-nostalgic admiration and her regret.
