I travelled the entired L&C trail 2 years ago and used an earlier edition of this book and an earlier edition of Julie Fanselow's guide book to the trail. Fifer's book has beautiful maps, but in all other ways, I felt that Fanselow's guide book was much better. The Fifer book was lacking a lot of information on sites, hotels, and campsites that the Fanselow book had. Also- my copy of the Fifer book started to fall apart after a few days on the road- the binding wasn't very secure- this makes big difference when you're referring to a book every day for several weeks! Additionally, the Fifer book had a lot of ads and the Fanselow book didn't. Some of these problems might have been corrected in the new edition, of course. I'm glad I had the Fifer book on the trail- the maps were helpful at times. But if someone is looking to purchase just one book to travel the L&C trail, Fanselow's book is definitely superior.

Colombia (Viva Travel Guides) Review

Colombia (Viva Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

This book is exactly what I needed for my trip to Colombia. What I've found with VIVA is that their maps are always up-to-date, unlike some of the other travel guides I've had to deal with. Moreover, I like that these reviews are really rated by people who have traveled to the country before. These guides aren't like other guidebooks that cater to a specific demographic, like budget student travelers or the five-star-only set. I can stay in a hostel in one city and a historic landmark in another.
I've been a member of the South American Explorers for a while, and what I've found is that most of the people I meet in countries down there like to use VIVA's website just as much as I do. It's a guide put together by travelers and for travelers, and that's why I stick with them. Yet another great guide!

In fact, I returned it. This book describes, in a very bland, boring way the several state parks and beaches along Hwy 1. I just got back from a trip down Hwy 1 and didn't even take this book with me. This books reads like someone printed out pages from the internet and put them in a book. Two thumbs down! The only things hidden in this book are the few-and-far-between listings for places that can't already be found in the AAA Tour Book. The layout and verbiage are bit more friendly but all in all, I found this guide book to be long on pat advice, (I.E. "Carry extra water when traveling in the desert") and short on usefull tips and interesting destinations.
Not bad if you aren't a AAA member or can't borrow the Arizona Tour book from one, but definitely far below my expectations.
This will be the first book I've ever returned for credit.

Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America Review

Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this author on C-Span's Book TV and was captivated by the way he described the homeless "hobohemia" counterculture of the early 20th century. The excerpts he read and the enthusiasm he conveyed for his subject convinced me that this would be a book worth buying. As I soon found out, and as another reviewer has said, "Citizen Hobo" is so much more than a history of homelessness. It is a "tour-de-force," a historical pageant that compresses what the author said was 10 years of research into a little over 300 pages.
"Citizen Hobo" tells a great epic. After the Civil War, large-scale changes in the economy put millions of "tramps" on the road in seach of work. These men eventually created their own culture that DePastino calls "hobohemia." While many Americans romanticized hobohemia and even embraced the hobo life as a liberation from the "rat race" of capitalism, government officials and politicians like Franklin Roosevelt tried to figure out ways to get hoboes to settle down. During the Great Depression and World War II period, these leaders created new welfare programs and forms of prefential treatment intended to encourage white men to get married, buy a house, have kids, and conform to the "American way of life." (After reading this book, you will never think of Roosevelt's New Deal or the GI Bill in the same way again!) These programs poured so much money into suburban cookie-cutter homes during the 1950s and 1960s that little was left over for apartments and lower-cost housing in the city, a failure that contributed to the homelessness crisis of the last twenty years.
This is just the bare outline of a story which is so richly textured and multi-dimensional that the reader can get lost in the fascinating details. But DePastino knows just when to pull the reader back and show the big picture again. His writing is beautiful and elegant, not a zippy read that can be dispensed with quickly, but a deep and thoughtful narrative with lots of great anecdotes and analyses along the way. His examinations of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" and "Dharma Bums" are masterful, as are the stories he tells about Walt Whitman, Jack London, Charlie Chaplin, Woody Guthrie, Bill Mauldin, and many others. Although DePastino covers the economic and policy angles on the problem, his first love is obviously culture, especially literature, music, and movies. While the other reviewer wanted to run out and listen to Guthrie, Dylan, and Springsteen after reading the book, I wanted to watch the movies that "Citizen Hobo" discusses, like "Modern Times," "Sullivan's Travels," and "Easy Rider."
DePastino is convinced, and he has convinced me, that homelessness is woven into the fabric of American life and that to address homelessness means changing, yet again, the rights of American citizenship.
This is a great book. Let's hope we don't have to wait 10 years for another from this author!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America

In the years following the Civil War, a veritable army of homeless men swept across America's "wageworkers' frontier" and forged a beguiling and bedeviling counterculture known as "hobohemia." Celebrating unfettered masculinity and jealously guarding the American road as the preserve of white manhood, hoboes took command of downtown districts and swaggered onto center stage of the new urban culture. Less obviously, perhaps, they also staked their own claims on the American polity, claims that would in fact transform the very entitlements of American citizenship. In this eye-opening work of American history, Todd DePastino tells the epic story of hobohemia's rise and fall, and crafts a stunning new interpretation of the "American century" in the process. Drawing on sources ranging from diaries, letters, and police reports to movies and memoirs, Citizen Hobo breathes life into the largely forgotten world of the road, but it also, crucially, shows how the hobo army so haunted the American body politic that it prompted the creation of an entirely new social order and political economy. DePastino shows how hoboes—with their reputation as dangers to civilization, sexual savages, and professional idlers—became a cultural and political force, influencing the creation of welfare state measures, the promotion of mass consumption, and the suburbanization of America. Citizen Hobo's sweeping retelling of American nationhood in light of enduring struggles over "home" does more than chart the change from "homelessness" to "houselessness." In its breadth and scope, the book offers nothing less than an essential new context for thinking about Americans' struggles against inequality and alienation.

What I like about this book is that while it contains the usual helpful information about where to eat, sleep, shop and see the key sights (and sites), it presents a fascinating look into these two great national parks that are so close together yet so different. It's obvious that the authors spend a great deal of time here and understand the nuances of place. Especially intriguing were the insights into wildlife issues, fire and other important ecological matters, as well as what makes the surrounding communities unique.
What also set this book apart was the attention that Jackson Hole received as an important part of this great vacation landscape.
I read to my husband as we drove through the parks, getting the story behind the story!

Gateway to Japan (Kodansha Guide) Review

Gateway to Japan (Kodansha Guide)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having lived in Japan for the past 6 years, I've had the opportunity to use all of the major guidebooks (and quite a few of the minor ones as well), and without a doubt, the most useful and informative guidebook is this one. Of course Lonely Planet has lots of information about restaurants and hotels, but you can get the tourist information center to help you with hotels and wherever you walk you can find plenty of nice restaurants. What you really want is a purpose to visit the places that you are visiting. Lonely Planet just tells you what things are, but this guidebooks tells you the history of each place, so you can understand why each place is important. If you're looking for a guidebook to tell you where the clubs, hangouts, and youth hostels are, then maybe this isn't the book you're looking for. However, if you're looking for a nice meaty book to feed you mind on, this is it.

Guide to the Guide [from the book]When friends want to know where to go in Japan, I always ask, "What are you interested in?" One friend spent every day at the Kabuki theater in Tokyo. Another ventured north to savor the culinary traditions of Tohoku. We know people who adore Tokyo, exulting in the energy of the world's most futuristic megapolis. Others loath it and flee to tranquil Kyoto, the former imperial city that epitomizes the refinement of traditional culture. Still others visit both cities and marvel at the extremes represented by these opposing poles of the Japanese experience. The diversity of cultural and geographic offerings can be intimidating. The two sections of this hook, History and Culture and Japan by Region, are designed to make them more manageable. History and Culture focuses on specific topics and recommends where to go. Japan by Region gives the practical information you need to make the trip.History and Culture"A Brief History" introduces the major historical periods and includes a list of the most important figures in Japanese history and culture; their names appear in uppercase letters throughout the book. The chapters that follow provide both an overview and a practical reference on various subjects. For example, "Cuisine" contains bilingual "menus" from which you can order food in restaurants. Most of the chapters conclude with a list of recommendations. Any place that is mentioned in both the main text and the list appears in uppercase.Japan by RegionThe ten regional chapters appear in geographic order, from north to south (see map on p. vi). The largest of Japan's four main islands, Honshu, and the smallest, Shikoku, together make up seven chapters. The remaining three chapters are devoted to Hokkaido, Kyushu, and the Okinawan archipelago. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction and lists the best attractions, special interests, and seasonal events.Transit Diagrams. The transit diagram at the beginning of each regional chapter shows the main trunk line (usually the bullet train) traversing the region, together with other train and bus lines that branch off. The main junctions on the trunk line are assigned roman numerals and treated as jumping-off points from which to explore side routes; the stations along the side routes are assigned arabic numerals. The text describes in numerical order each main junction, followed by the side routes; their direction is denoted by the letters "N" for north, "E" for east, and so forth. For example, suppose you want to visit Dewa Sanzan (transit key number IV:W3) in Tohoku. To see how to get there, turn to the Tohoku transit diagram (p.152); go down the trunk line to the fourth city, Sendai ,then go west three notches. The text follows the same organization and is, in effect, a series of mini-itineraries.Dining, Lodgings, and Local Maps. Dining and lodging facilities are listed at the end of each town or locale. Telephone area codes are usually listed beside the lodgings heading. Shops, restaurants, and hotels will appear on local maps according to a number-key system. (See inside front cover for a key to symbols.) Ratings are awarded on a scale of from one to three stars based on quality, service, and atmosphere. Credit-card information is supplied for every establishment for which the information was available.

I am thirlled with this new book. Competing titles do cover the basic steps to opening a B&B, but this book takes you way beyond the basic business details and then gives the information you need to understand how to market an inn on the Internet. This is HUGE! This new book is a comprehensive guide for anyone wanting to get "heads-in-the-beds" at a new inn or an exisiting one. I love the secton on increasing Web site traffic and how optimize your Web site from a marketing perspective -- something lacking in the other titles on this hospitality subject.
PROS:
*All the business basics are there in the first few chapters.
*Experienced innkeepers have added tips and hints for success.
*The Internet is explained in great detail, as it relates to innkeeping.
*The marketing on the Internet guidelines are well explained.

CON:
*The author just begins to explain blogging, I'd like to see more on this topic.

WOW! I have a copy of the 1980s version of Rutes and Penner--this is a totally new edition, all new photography, etc.--and consider it the 'Bible' for hotel design. But the new edition is twice as big and full of current examples and information. It has 32 pages of gorgeous color photos of great hotels and resorts from around the world. The text is in three main sections: Hotel Types (downtown, resorts, conference centers, luxury hotels, casino hotels, etc.); Design Guide (planning and design information for all areas of the hotel); and Development Guide (feasibility, programming, future trends). In addition, there are lots of appendices and sidebars from such people as Ian Schrager, I.M. Pei, Robert Stern, and John Portman. I've looked at other hotel design books in the stores and there isn't anything that is so complete or current. There are other books on boutique hotels, with lots of pictures, but nothing with this global coverage of all types of lodging properties. With well over 400 pages, this book will be the new Bible for hotel design. I can't imagine a better choice for anyone involved with the hotel development, architecture, or interior design.

Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, as a tremendously popular seminar leader, and now, I am pleased to say, as an outstanding author.
His book, Hospitality Law, provides an up-to-date information source that can teach practicing hospitality managers and students how to avoid and minimize legal difficulties they might otherwise face in the running of lodging properties. The book is well written, easy to follow, and best of all, gives examples from the actual operations of lodging and restaurant establishments. Especially strong are the sections on contract law, safety and security, and employment issues.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the legal issues that arise in the everyday decisions that a lodging property professional must make.

The Surfer's Guide to Costa Rica and SW Nicaragua (Volume 7)
Average Reviews:

I took this book with me to Costa Rica a couple of years ago and it was worth every penny and them some. Everything including the tips on packing, where to stay, and where to surf was good, solid, useful information. The maps were a little crude, but there are driving instructions on how to get to the breaks. (To be fair, the author does not claim that this is a map book and recommends a company that specializes in road maps.) The book focuses on those issues and needs from the perspective of a traveling surfer, nothing in here about kayaking or bird watching. There are several charts, organized by location, showing dozens of places to stay with information about prices and amenities. Like most surfers, I don't like to commit to a place and time weeks in advance, so it really helps to have a handy reference to local lodging (especially in a foreign country). Given how hard it is to describe how a spot will break at all times on all tides, the description of the surf breaks was generally accurate (at least on the dozen or so spots I did visit). If you're traveling to Costa Rica to surf, take this book.
