The Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest: A Romantic Travel Guide Review

The Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest: A Romantic Travel Guide
Average Reviews:

I bought this book hoping to find some little known and inexpensive romantic hideaways. Although some of the wineries that were described met this expectation, this book primarily catalogues restaurants and places to stay that have been rated as expensive or very expensive. It seems the author took the opportunity to explore the best places to write off on her taxes. I'm sure these places are beautiful and romantic if worrying about the bill won't kill your libido. I should have made better use of the "look inside this book" feature before buying.

We suddenly decided to go to Alaska in 2 weeks and we needed a good travel guide so we could do a lot of last minute planning quickly. This is it! I was able to make all our arrangements using it (along with the Internet). You can find the information you want easily in this book. I've been to Alaska before and was pleased to find that this is accurate too. I've used a lot of travel books for various trips to other places and frequently end up frustrated with them, but this book has been a total delight. I highly recommend it.

St. Mungo's Robin: A Gil Cunningham Murder Mystery (Gil Cunningham Murder Mysteries) Review

St. Mungo's Robin: A Gil Cunningham Murder Mystery (Gil Cunningham Murder Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1493 Glasgow Scotland is fast becoming one of my favorite places in which to immerse myself. Gil Cunningham is a man of law who escaped a life in the Church in book one of this series, the Harper's Quine. Instead he becomes the Archbishop's Questioner for his city and the surrounding countryside. He's a natural at it. His soon-to-be-father-in-law, Master Mason Pierre, is a great help and so is his bride to be, Alys. Each book reveals more about the intriguing world of late 15th century Scotland.
This mystery is fascinating to watch unfold. From how long a body has been dead to telling time without clocks, it's a good puzzle dressed in unfamiliar garments. The characters often speak in broad dialect and some of the passages can be tricky to read. But once the vernacular gets in your head, it gets easier to figure out what was said. Some of the clues will be familiar to readers - how the accounts are kept, is there a woman or two to question, who's lying and about what. And a very satisfactory conclusion to the whole tangled mess.
An excellent read!

The warden of St Serf's has been found dead in the almshouse garden. He appears to have been killed during the night but there are those who are convinced he was present at that morning's service, and Gil Cunningham promptly finds himself entangled in the internal politics of the almshouse. The elderly residents, the almshouse nurse and Humphrey, her deranged favorite, have all been set against one another by the dead man's scheming — and then there is a discarded mistress and an almshouse ghost to consider as well. Tracing the dead man's last movements between the Cathedral precinct and the shores of the Clyde, Gil is both helped and hindered by his two sisters who have come to Glasgow for his wedding to Alys. Between them they widen the field of suspicion to embrace old friends from the university, a seaman home from a distant voyage, and mad Humphrey's brother. Then an uncanny event followed by the arrival of Gil's godfather, wedding guest and patron of the almshouse, precipitates the crisis. As so often, it is clever Alys who helps Gil find the ultimate solution to this mystery.

I used this book for planning a quick trip to Everglades, Miami and Key Largo. I found it to have a good mix of history, attactions and restaurant reviews. We ate at several places recommended by the book.
One thing that would make it much more useful would be to include a fold out map so that you can see more detail of a larger area. I found I had to keep flipping back and forth between maps in the book.

With so many famous sights and over-advertised attractions in Florida, travelers may inadvertently find themselves caught in the tourist route through the state. Hidden Florida offers a better option. While it tells readers how to best enjoy the top spots in Miami, Orlando, and the Keys, it also leads them to lesser-visited destinations that reveal the natural beauty and local character of the Sunshine State. For example, travelers can sleep with the fishes at a former research lab that has been transformed into a unique lodge located 22 feet beneath the surface of the sea. Or they may choose to feast on Old Florida favorites like gator tail, frog legs, and catfish at a backcountry eatery. From snorkeling and surfing to camping and hiking, there are abundant opportunities for outdoor adventures at the150 beaches and 129 parks detailed in this guide. The author describes over 400 attractions at over 50 locales across the state and reviews dining spots including 125 fresh seafood restaurants and 22 Cuban eateries. Karen Brown's Italy Hotels 2009: Exceptional Places to Stay and Itineraries

Karen Brown books are essential to all my trips to Italy. I have made 4 different trips from the North to the South and to Sicily. I am
grateful to her because we have stayed in some amazing places that were recommended in her books. Its VERY unlikely I would have ever found these, often unique, charming inns and hotels without her books. A few caveats are; the place/Inn/Hotel etc. may have gotten a little 'shop worn' since the original Karen Brown visit a few years prior and the owners may be less charming to you than someone there to review them and give them a 'stamp of approval' and put them in a very high profile travel book. I might suggest that Karen Brown
or staff re-review these places more frequently and do so anonymously. While I give her books very high marks there were a couple un-
pleasant surprises. Oh well, travel is never 'fool proof' and I still give her books a 95%!

Hidden Pacific Northwest: Including Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Victoria, and Coastal British Columbia (Hidden Travel)
Average Reviews:

I have the 5th Edition of this book, but, this can only be better I hope.
It is a very personal review of the states and what they have to offer and as opposed to other books that are just boring and incomprehensible listings of attractions and dining and lodging .
I actually went to some of the dining and hidden attraction recommendations from this book and it didn't fail me. All those places were certainly what the book said they would be or maybe more than that.
The only drawback i can see is that there wasnt any mention of good campgrounds that car-campers could easily refer to. But for that, you can look up "the best in tent camping".
Good Luck with your trips. I know mine was a great success.

Sharn: City of Towers (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying, Eberron Supplement) Review

Sharn: City of Towers (Dungeons and Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying, Eberron Supplement)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for a highly detailed city book for an Eberron campaign you can't go wrong here. Sharn provides endless outlets for adventure, from thieves guilds to corrupt officials to exotic and interesting locales in the city itself.
This setting book is focused almost exclusively on the city of Sharn itself, with only a brief discussion of the rest of Eberron and how it relates to Sharn politically and economically. Those who are looking for additional crunch - rules and Prestige Class - will be disappointed, though what is here is very well integrated with the city.
The bulk of the book breaks the city down into Districts and presents extensive information on these smaller sections of the city. Prominent businesses, guilds, NPCs, and other such information is presented. Politics, law and order, and life in Sharn each receive their own detailed chapter.
Eberron fans can't pass this one up. While the information is only focused on the city of Sharn, the feel of the book is entirely Eberron.

Everywhere I read, this book was recommended. It is the Bible for this ride and I would recommend it to anyone. We carried it with us at all times. We used it for pre-planning, on the ride and after. My only recommendation would be for the authors to charge a little more so a website could be created where trail users can share their own recommendations.
In short, if you're going to go all 320 miles, you need this book. Don't leave home without it.

Hidden Hawaii: Including Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, and the Big Island Review

Hidden Hawaii: Including Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, and the Big Island
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ray Riegert's Hidden Hawaii: Including Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, and the Big Island (Hidden Travel) published by Ulysses Press incorporates full-bleed photos of the Pacific Ocean, lava flows, on the outside and inside of the book. I claimed this travel guide from the Mini Book Expo for Bloggers because my husband and I have been talking about a vacation to Hawaii since before we got married six years ago. Ideally, that would have been our honeymoon of choice, but money was unavailable at the time for that kind of vacation, so we went somewhere closer for our honeymoon--Jamaica. Now that we are older and wiser and are willing to plan ahead, we are looking toward our goal, Hawaii, and hopefully, Kauai.
This travel guide is larger than I would like to take along with me on the streets as a handbook for exploration, but then again I carry a large SLR and other photographic equipment. However, this book does have a lot to offer tourists interested in a trip to the island chain.
The white and green pages provide readers with a crisp, clean page to read, and the contents are broken down by island--Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kauai. One of the best parts of this travel guide is that it not only tells the reader the touristy locations that are "must see," but also the hidden aspects of the islands. For instance, in Waikiki, one of the most well-known attractions is Diamond Head. One of the hidden treasures of Waikiki highlighted in the book, which peaked my interest, is Queen Kapiolani Hibiscus Garden where tour buses do not have a place to stop, but tourists can spend the day in splendor picnicking.
Hidden Hawaii not only describes the major hotel chains in Hawaii, but some of the smaller hotels and bed and breakfasts. It also contains green and white maps broken down by particular regions and various coastlines, which will help tourists orient themselves. Some of the maps outline streets, and many of them are dotted with attractions.
I would love to see the Star of the Sea Painted Church on the Big Island for myself, which is another of the hidden treasures that can be found in this book. According to the book, a Belgian priest painted murals of religious scenes inside the church, which reminded me of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling in Italy painted by Michelangelo. This church must be a sight to see.
From outdoor activities like kayaking in the ocean to hiking to tennis, this book has something for everyone, even those just interested in lying on the beaches and getting a suntan. There are favorite tourist night spots and those that are hidden.
My husband and I enjoyed looking through the book and picking out the hidden spots and the more well-known spots we would like to see on our trip someday, but we were a bit disappointed that there weren't too many photos of the islands and some the parks, destinations, museums, activities, and the like. All of the photos in the book are at the beginning. If I had to pick a drawback, that would be it.
This book is for tourists interested in the hidden side of the islands and the tourist attractions. I would recommend it as a starting guide for a trip to Hawaii.

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino Review

Hidden Coast of California: Including San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and Mendocino
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ray Riegert has devoted a lifetime to travelling the coast of California and finding favorite restaurants, bed & breakfast establishments, and cataloging some of the finer museums and beaches. This book has a little something for everyone, but a lot more if your idea of hidden travel is visiting the large cities of the California Coast. San Francisco receives nearly 100 pages of coverage alone and the clear emphasis is upon urban areas. In these places, Riegert has found some of the best eating establishments, listed the finest gay friendly nightclubs, discussed local parks, and, of particular interest to me, included a number of popular and classy neighborhood bookstores. However, what I consider California's truly hidden coast, its wild and scenic parks and open space areas, receive decidedly less coverage. A few trails are listed, though the trailhead locations are not identified, and only Point Reyes National Seashore gets the full coverage it deserves. On the positive side, Riegert does not neglect the many rural hostels of California where budget travellers can stay often at cheaper rates than at nearby campgrounds. The reason I am only giving this book 3 stars is that it has a lot of text, well over 500 pages, and all of it is in small print. This makes for difficult reading. The lack of photos also detracts a bit from a travel guide. On the whole, I think the author tried to be a little too comprehensive with the book and the result is that while everything was mentioned, almost everything could have used a fuller description. Still, if you want 3 day weekend tours of California's largest cities along with adequate descriptions of nearby smaller tourist destinations (Laguna Beach and La Jolla in southern California, Big Sur, Mendocino, and Eureka to the north) this is a nice book.

He leads travelers to bohemian coffeehouses near the shops and theaters of San Francisco's Union Square, traces the roots of the movie industry at famous film sites around Los Angeles and brings the entire family to San Diego's world-famous zoo and animal theme parks. This book looked perfect for our week-long trip to Park City this summer, but I ended up finding much more relevant information on the internet and through visitor centers. Not one travel decision we made during the entire week was influenced by this book--and I read it cover to cover. It summarizes a lot of available things to do, but it doesn't rate things to give you an idea of what would be worthwhile to do. We didn't use any of the outdoors stuff since we went during the summer and the summer activities were too old for our 2-year old and 4-year old. The introductions to each section were interesting, but fairly Morman-biased (expected, I guess). Anyway, I had modest hopes for this book, but they were not fulfilled. It was a waste of money for me.

The Spirit to Serve Marriott's Way Review

The Spirit to Serve Marriott's Way
Average Reviews:

I stayed at a Marriott in Denver last week and found a copy of this book in the nightstand. I expected it to be hogwash and instead found it to be the most useful business book I've ever read. It is a quick read (about 150 pages, not the 240 mentioned in the Amazon catalog). It is entertaining without being self-indulgent and informative without being preachy. The anecdotes revealed an appropriate level of introspection (my one quibble is that Mr. Marriott claims that his family and faith come before business and yet also describes himself as a workaholic). I'm not in the hospitality industry and yet I found dozens of parallels to my own business (computer software and book publishing). Most interesting were the frank assessments of Marriott's business mistakes. He truly used them as an opportunity to learn. The book is chock full of excellent and thought-provoking strategies and totally devoid of the cheesy buzzwords so prevalent in, say, the latest Tom Peters books. Although I have no association with Marriott, the book will cause me to examine the entire service industry in a new light.

The guide also leads readers to the Grist Mill Inn, a luxurious bed and breakfast built into a former flour mill, and Caf Diablo, where rattlesnake cakes and pumpkin-seed trout are part of the daily fare.
